A blind engineer has built a SMART cane which has Google Maps, Bluetooth and a sensory device, which will make life so much easier and convenient for those without sight.
Whilst technology mainly revolves around the latest entertainment devices, one company decided to take technology to the next level and make a product that would make a practical difference in peoples’ lives.
The WeWalk smart cane was created by engineer Kursat Ceylan, who is a CEO and co-founder of a non-profit called the Young Guru Academy (YGA), as he wanted to design a product that would help make the daily challenges of being blind that little bit easier.
Kursat had noted that current technology wasn’t sufficient enough to help with these needs, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.
This innovative cane provides what a regular cane cannot. It has built-in speakers, voice assistance, Google Maps, a Bluetooth system that can sync to other devices, and high-end sensors which alerts the user to vibrations when above chest level obstacles are within proximity.
Kursat explained to CNN: “In these days we are talking about flying cars, but these people have been using just a plain stick.
“As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station I don’t know which is my exit… I don’t know which bus is approaching… which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk.”
Kursat’s ultimate goal is to make the WeWalk cane a product that helps with social participation.
The device is not completely new, however, but Kursat has taken it to the next level by utilising and incorporating current technologies already available – which makes it a completely new idea!
Since the device has been shared, a lot of people have expressed their enthusiasm for the product that would be so beneficial to their lives.
Duygu Kayaman is just one of the proud users of the WeWalk cane, as she truly believes it is a fantastic device.
She said: “To me, WeWalk represents the end of an era and the start of a new one.”
According to the World Health Organisation, it is estimated that there are 36 million blind people across the world. So just imagine all the possible changes it could make to all these peoples’ lives.
