A kitten with a cleft lip and one eye is struggling to find a loving new home to call her own, as shelter volunteers worry her unconventional look is a deterrent to potential owners.
Staff at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home fear that Ana, a cat with a cleft lip and one eye, is struggling to be adopted because of her unusual look.
Ana was born with a cleft lip and lost her right eye after she was born with a rare abnormality that left one of her eyeballs underdeveloped.
Unfortunately, most pet owners are searching for a photogenic pet and Ada does not conform to society’s standard of beauty – even though we think she’s perfect just the way she is!
There is always a high demand for kittens all year round, and owners are constantly lining up to pick adorable little balls of fluff and give them a new home.
However, Ana has been available for adoption for the past three weeks and so far, there has been no potential owners who want to take her home.
Battersea’s Cattery Manager Rachel Saunders said: “It is such a shame when people take animals at face value when searching for a new pet, rather than looking beyond their appearance to find unique quirks and personalities.
“As well as her distinctive face, Ana is a black cat and too many people still have misconceptions and superstitions about that particular colour.
“We think she’s beautiful just the way she is because the things that make an animal different are what makes them special.
“Rescue animals may not be perfect, but they’re certainly worth it, and soft and playful Ana is a fantastic example of this.”
Regardless of society’s standards, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home knew that when Ana, the domesticated short-hair, came through the door that she was special.
Until a home can be found for Ana, she is staying with a foster carer.
Rachel added: “As with any rescue animal, Ana deserves a fresh start and has a lot to offer as a pet.
“She’s had a tough start to life, but she’s definitely still got eight of her nine lives left to live and we hope that her luck is about to change for the better.
“She may not have 20/20 vision, but we believe that this will be her year.”
Hopefully, Ana will have the same luck as Lady, a stray cat who had to have her ears removed due to an infection, as she was quickly snapped up once shared on social media.
