A man has invented a device that stops your cat from bringing back dead animals. Your cat might think they’re doing you a favour, but they certainly aren’t!
Apparently cats who bring dead animals to your house are actually giving you a gift, well, it’s the thought that counts.
Fear no more as an Amazon engineer named Ben Hamm has invented AI technology that will prevent you from coming downstairs in the morning to a ‘gift’.
Ben himself has a cat and was fed up of it returning from a wander with a dead rat. He used his engineering background to invent a device that can tell if your cat is holding prey inside its mouth.
He hooked up his cat flap to an AI-enabled DeepLens (Amazon’s own camera) and an Arduino-powered locking system. This means that if your cat approaches the cat flap with prey, the flap will close and the recipient will receive a text message. If the answer is “yes,” the cat flap will lock for 15 minutes and the cat owner will receive a message to inform them. In a nice gesture, the system also sends a donation to the National Audubon Society, which protects the various types of birds that cats love to kill.
Ben, the creator, explained all about his invention in a video which you can watch below.
