An airport security worker has been fired after footage reveals her handing a passenger a “horrible” note which has caused offense.
As a passenger was passing through airport screening area in New York, he was shocked to receive a note from a worker which said: “You ugly!!!”
A worker at Greater Rochester International Airport in Monroe County, New York, passed the note to Neal Strassner as he was passing through the security checkpoint.
After handing him the note, the unidentified worker walked away whilst laughing, leaving Neal confused. The worker was then seen laughing to a fellow colleague.
The worker then shouted at Neal as he walked towards his gate saying, “You going to open the note?.”
Footage of the incident was obtained by Strassner after making a Freedom of Information request to the airport. After over a month of waiting, Strassner finally had access to the footage.
Following an investigation by TSA, the airport worker was fired.
Speaking to WROC, Strassner said he didn’t know what to think of the whole incident.
“I got handed a note, I didn’t really think too much of it. I just kept going. I had 10 minutes to get to my gate.
“That’s what I was focused on and I kept going, the woman called back to me are you going to open that. Are you going to look or something like that?”
Strassner continued: “I’m assuming it was trying to be a joke I don’t think she was maliciously trying to insult people, but you really don’t know if somebody was in that mindset, and they received that piece of paper. It would throw them back to a dark mental place.
“You don’t know where someone is in their head. They really could be in the worst spot ever and it’s like a smile would be great for that person, honestly you don’t have to throw insults like that.”
The airport worker was not actually an official employee of TSA or the Rochester Airport. She was employed by a Virginia-based security company through VMD Corp.
TSA regularly hire independant security companies throughout the country.
It was confirmed by officials of TSA that the employee in question had had their employment contract terminated after a thorough investigation of the incident.
They also made a statement to WROC: “TSA holds contractors to the highest ethical standards and has zero tolerance for this type of behavior.
“This instance, which involved a contract employee, was investigated immediately upon receiving the complaint by the traveler. The employee has since been terminated by the contractor.”
Strassner expressed curiosity at the possibility of other travellers having had similar experiences, this comes after the footage later shows the employee handing out further offensive notes to passengers.
Speaking to WROC, Strassner said: “I’m really curious what the other notes said. I travel a lot and the airport normally is spectacular.
“This was a totally weird event that they (VMD Corp) seemed to handle properly. I travel a lot and just want to make sure they get some credit to their organisation and don’t let one lady trash their whole reputation.”
