Barbie has unveiled a new series of diverse dolls, including ones that have alopecia and vitiligo – and they’re beautiful!
When people say Barbie, a skinny iconic figure appears with golden skin, long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes… But now times are changing and the latest addition has attempted to diversify the Barbie we all know.
Mattel is determined to change the perception of Barbie dolls and want to redefine what “looks like Barbie.”
With its latest collection, the American company has certainly achieved a “more diverse doll line” that includes “more skin tones, hair types, and body shapes than ever before.”
The dolls are a part of the brand’s 2020 Fashionistas line, which over the past five years has showcased over 170 looks that represent global diversity and inclusivity.
Last year, the line debuted Barbie dolls with permanent disabilities, such as one that had a prosthetic limb.
From a bald Barbie to one with a prosthetic limb, Mattel is determined to move away from the image of Barbie who is just a thin blonde icon and show that there is so much diversity when it comes to the definition of beauty.
For many years, dolls such as Barbie have been blamed for young girls having a distorted image of beauty, body shape and skin tone but with this new collection, hopefully, that is about to change.
The toy company took to Twitter to make the announcement about the latest launch, which has the important message of “What makes us different makes us beautiful.”

Many people were overjoyed at the announcement, as they finally felt represented and reflected in the Barbie range for the first time.
Heeeyy! That's pretty sweet. I've had #vitiligo since I was little, and no one knew what it was. In recent years, I've seen high fashion models with it, and now this.. very cool. ❤️ Might have to get one for my 4 & 6 yrold #girls. ☺️#Barbie #StillCool https://t.co/ka41MfbVxc

Based on the success of the previous line, this new collection is sure to do well. It has even been revealed that one of the most popular Barbie items of 2019 was a curvy black Fashionista that had an afro hairstyle.
The Barbie with vitiligo is already available to buy now, whilst the doll with alopecia is expected to hit shop shelves sometime in June.
It’s not only Barbie that has had a revamp with this new addition, but Ken has also had a makeover. You can now have a Ken doll with ginger hair or even long rooted hair.
Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and global head of Barbie and its doll portfolio stated: “We are proud that Barbie is the most diverse doll line on the market that continues to evolve to better reflect the world girls see around them.”
Whilst on the topic of Barbie, it is worth noting that that the iconic doll will soon be getting a live-action movie, and Barbie will be played by Margot Robbie. The film will follow Barbie, who is a doll that is expelled from the very imaginative “Barbieland” for not being perfect enough and with her newfound freedom, decides to explore the “real world”. Not only that, but it will be directed by the award-winning Greta Gerig who directed Lady Bird, and her husband Noah Baumbach will be penning the script.
