A doctor with a talent for art has made the most of his cartoon drawing skills by putting them on children’s’ dressings so that they don’t find the scars they have scary after surgery.
Dr Robert Parry wants to make surgery a little less scary for young children by drawing amazing sketches on their dressings when they wake up from surgery so that they aren’t scared of the scars.
Akron Children’s Hospital, in Ohio, has a doctor who goes the extra mile to make sure his patients have a pleasant experience as possible.
The hospital explained why the paediatric surgeon goes above and beyond in his career, saying: “Dr Robert Parry always takes a moment to make sure a scar isn’t the only lasting memory of a child’s surgical procedure.
“He surprises them with a hand-drawn dressing featuring a character or something that personally interests them.”
Since 2011, Dr Parry has been with the hospital and in that time has performed over 10,000 operations.
He enjoys drawing anything from Disney characters to sports team logos and once he even drew a French salad “dressing” bottle as a part of a pun between him and the patient.
Each drawing takes the doctor around five minutes to complete, but they make a huge difference in the patients’ mood when they wake up.
In 2014, Samantha Manning took her 11-month-old daughter to the hospital for an operation on her liver.
Dr Parry was the surgeon in charge of the procedure and he drew a beautiful rose garden on her dressing.
In an interview with CNN, Samantha said: “We had no idea ahead of time that this was Dr Parry’s special trademark.
“We were really moved by it. The rose garden was symbolic of our larger experience with Dr Parry and the hospital overall, taking the extra step to do those small, little gestures. It shows how much they care and really lifted our spirits.”
Also moved by the doctor’s kind gesture was Christina Potts Whipskey’s daughter Kennedy, who had an operation nine years ago.
When she woke up she discovered that Dr Parry had drawn a cartoon on her dressing.
She said: “The doctor told Kennedy and her siblings she would have a lovely butterfly after she was done.
“When Kennedy came out, everyone was excited to see what the doctor meant. Kennedy was so proud of the pretty bandage and not concerned about any scars.”
