Sky has made possibly the greatest Christmas advert in the history of Christmas advertisements as E.T. finally returns to Earth to reunite with Elliot.
The most beloved alien has returned in the form of a Sky Christmas advertisement, having come back to see his old friend Elliot.
Four decades later, the duo has changed a lot, they’ve both settled down and had families of their own.
Sky’s heartwarming new advert begins with Elliot’s kids discovering E.T. at the bottom of the garden, lurking behind a snowman.
After a few hair-raising screams, Elliot rushes out to find out what’s wrong, only to be overcome with happiness at finding his long-lost pal standing before his very eyes.
Elliot cries: “You came back!?”.
Yep, you’re going to need to keep a box of tissues beside you.
When the initial shock is over, Elliot formally introduces E.T. to his children and welcomes him indoors, away from the cold.
During his visit, E.T. learns that a lot of things have changed since his last visit to Earth. There’s now virtual reality, the internet and so much more. The two even settle down to watch a Christmas classic snuggled on the sofa.
E.T. settles in much quicker than his previous visit, eventually snuggling up with Elliot’s son. You even get a peek of a smile on E.T.’s face as he smiles at his surroundings.
Of course, all good things must come to an end and in the middle of the night, E.T. shows Elliot his own little family before heading back to his own home planet.
As a tradition, there is only one way for the iconic character to return back home. To return to his spaceship, E.T. must soar through the air on a bike as the quintessential soundtrack plays in the background.
It all makes for a rather bittersweet ending.
Sky UK and Ireland CEO has enthused about the new advert: “It’s an honour to bring E.T. back to Earth in this new festive short story, helping us to celebrate the magic of family time at Christmas and Sky’s part in bringing our customers together at this special time of year.”
Sky’s Director added: “More than anything, the whole story is about family.”
