It appeared in the epic conclusion of last night’s hour-long special of the show that Mick Carter had been shot after the heist he was part of went wrong, but the question on every fan’s mind is who did it?
But while EastEnders has revealed the identity of the pub landlord’s shooter, it was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, and it seemed to only be spotted by the more eagle eyed among us.
However, many fans viewing at home (as they were getting over their New Year’s Eve hangovers, let’s be honest) were distracted by the fact that Mick seemed to recognise one of the gunmen in the back of the van before the shots were fired.
As the gang pointed their fake guns at the driver, Mick ordered the two men sat in the back to open the doors and put their guns down.
As they stood by the back of the van, Mick and Keanu Taylor braced themselves as the doors began to open. Mick, however, got the shock of his life when he recognised one of the men sat in the back.
As they pointed the guns at each other, Mick said: “it’s you”. But before anything else could be said, a gunshot rang out in the streets of Albert Square and Mick fell backwards.
However, earlier in the episode Mick, appeared to look concerned when he received a text message from someone mysteriously named Halfway.
It read: “NHNY am down your way today – might drop by.”
But even as the show ended, there were no further clues as to the identity of Halfway.
Then the credits listed an actor playing Halfway but there was still no more information about who he was or what his mysterious connection to Mick is.
Fans were frustrated regarding the identity of the man was, and took to Twitter to voice their confusion.
One wrote: “Are we meant to recognise him? #EastEnders” while another added: “Who was the boy in the van???? confused.com.”
A third felt the same, tweeting: “Who’s the guy that shot mick?!”
A fourth added: “Someone tell me who that was in the back of the van #EastEnders”.
Another shared a gif of Jennifer Aniston looking confused writing: “So who did Mick know? “it’s you” I can’t think who it could be!”
Others were equally frustrated with one writing: “it’s really bugging me not knowing who was in the back of the van.”
The only clue that the fans were given was the name of the actor that played the mysterious Halfway, which was Tony Clay.
Above his name was his character, which was listed as Callum “Halfway” Highway.
Speculation continues to spread about who exactly Halfway is, but some fans seem to think that they have figured it all out, and suspect that the villainous Aidan had set them all up.
Mick: “it’s you”

Fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the theory, with one saying: “Aidan is in on it and has set Mick, Keanu, Vincent and Phil up! He was in prison with Luke and Max has mastermind it all…..that’s my theory!”
While another commented: “So did Aidan completely set them up? The robbery was done right outside Phil’s garage during the day which is weird anyway…also why would they need armed and masked men in the back if they weren’t suspecting anything?? #EastEnders.”
A third said: A third suggested: “Is this heist in #EastEnders related to a revenge attack on Mick for his son Lee’s pub heist? Are Oz or his friends related to Aidan? Who issss that man!?”
And a fourth said: “clearly #Aidan was setting up Phil and others but why? Who was the silencer for? #Eastenders good attempt at comedy @johnyorke123”
Many people have had their say regarding who Mick’s gunman might have been, as one person took to social media and hypothesised that the mysterious name in the credits has something to do with the shooting: “Anyone think that that the person (named Callum Halfway Highway in the credits) who shot Mick may have been involved with the robbery involving his son Lee last year, who held Baby Ollie at gun point? Plus, Mick was texting a person named ‘Halfway’ earlier too.”

Another suggested: “The guy with the gun – which Mick said “it’s you” too is the same guy that text Mick earlier in that episode (halfway a friend of Lee’s) saying he was in the area, and he was going to drop in with his nickname Halfway… he was credited at the end of the episode.”
And another proposed: “#EastEnders Not sure he was involved in the Vic robbery. Characters name on the credits was Halfway. The text Mick got earlier was from Halfway Could it be someone Lee was in the army with or Lee is doing security work with. Also is Mel the she who ‘Will kill us if we are late?”
While other people have a hunch that the gunman might have been Lee Carter: “Maybe it’s the character #Lee but played by a new actor. #EastEnders #Mick #TheJob just a tad all over the place unprofessional and lack of organisation, planning and preparation. #Aiden I think #Mel will be the boss of the white van boys.”
While another asked: “Oh God. Don’t tell me the man in the van was a recast Lee? I simply will not allow it.”
Some people even think that the shooting came about at the hands of Mick’s secret son, as one person said: “I just thought what if this halfway the guy who shot mick was his secret son that Linda knows nothing about ?”
While others have suggested that maybe he wasn’t even shot at all, as one fan said: “Lead you to believe it was mick carter that was shot – think it was Keanu – as too obvious it was mick !”
The fan continued, suggesting Keanu would be a more surprising gun victim – noting that Shirley (Mick’s mum) and Linda (Mick’s wife) reacted differently to the shot being fired.
“Lead you to believe it was mick carter that was shot but it will probably turn out to be Keanu – as different reactions from Shirley & Linda!”
Never mind ‘Who Shot J.R?’, we now have ‘Who Shot Mick?’ to content with.
