Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson shared the first trailer on his social media channels yesterday.
The first trailer for Lionsgate’s Fighting With My Family was released yesterday and Dwayne Johnson, who also served as a Producer on the film was the first person to release the trailer to his 13million Twitter Followers. Written and Directed by Stephen Merchant, Fighting With My Family tells the hilarious and inspiring true story of one of WWE’s most famous stars, Saraya-Jade Bevis and how she became her wrestling alter-ego Paige. The film will show how it looked to become a dream come true for Saraya, her bother Zak, and the rest of their wrestling-obsessed family, but they soon realise that becoming a WWE superstar will demand more than they ever expected and could tear their family apart.
With a strong comedic cast including Nick Frost, Vince Vaughn and Stephen Merchant, as well as Lena Headey, Jack Lowden with rising star Florence Pugh taking on the legendary WWE superstar Paige. As well as producing the film, Dwayne Johnson will also be gracing the screen playing his wrestling alter-ego The Rock and I defy anyone not to get excited when he asks Paige ‘what her name is’ in the first look trailer!
Fighting With My Family has been a passion project of Johnson’s ever since he saw the Channel 4 documentary The Wrestlers in 2012 and using his obvious contacts at love for the industry, both himself and Stephen Merchant look to have produced a brilliant comedy-drama about one of wrestling’s most famous superstars. Merchant himself described working with Johnson and where the initial idea for the project came from for The Oxford Union. “Our dear friend, Dwayne The Rock Johnson, he’s friends with all of us… he was in England making a film and he was watching Channel 4. He’s eating his free shortbread, waiting for Grand Designs and this documentary comes on about this family of wrestlers. Bizarrely, I’d worked with him before and he contacted me and said “I think there might be a film in this””.
It is great to see Merchant getting behind the camera again to direct another comedy-drama, especially given how well received his more dramatic of roles in Logan and The Girl In The Spiders Web have seen him become one of the UK’s most bankable film stars. It looks like Fighting With My Family will be a huge hit for comedy and wrestling fans alike and in my opinion, anything that gets The Rock back in the ring is well worth my time.
Fighting With My Family is set for release in March 2019 by Lionsgate UK. Check out the trailer here
