Whilst stuck indoors during the coronavirus pandemic, kids have been making rainbow displays to cheer themselves and others up a little – but one mum has reacted in a way no one expected.
Across the UK, a heartwarming trend has been started online in which hundreds of kids of being trying to ‘spread hope’ by creating rainbow displays with the hashtags #FromMyWindow and #ChaseTheRainbow.
However, on the parenting forum Mumsnet, this did not go down well with one commentator who labelled it a ‘weapon’.

Mumsnetter Rufflecrow wrote a post titled ‘Please don’t put a rainbow in your window’ which was rather long, addressing the mum’s concerns.
Rufflecrow wrote: “For the past few years the rainbow has sadly become a symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community.
“If you’re thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel – many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.
“I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like s**t. Not the intended effect I’m sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.”
At the bottom of the poll, the user included a poll which asked readers the question: “Am I being unreasonable?”
The user probably expected many of the mums to agree with her, as users have previously been known to slate the LGBT+ rainbow, describing as a “Nazi flag”, “anti-female” and “a symbol of homophobia and misogyny”.
However, when the poll results came in on Tuesday morning, 92 per cent said that woman was being unreasonable.
Of those who had answered Rufflecrow’s poll, only eight per cent of them agreed and it may not have finished yet, but with 1635 Mumsnetters having already voted, the verdict looks pretty clear.
Despite voting their opinion, many also took to the comments section to say exactly what they thought.
In an incredible display of positivity, #children around the world have been posting rainbow pictures in their windows in hopes of brightening everyone's mood and, sending the message that "everything will be okay." #chasetherainbow https://t.co/BxMFCxeoV2

One wrote: “If this is all you have to feel s**t about consider yourself bloody lucky. Get over yourself.”
Another replied: “People are fekkin dying, if my kids want to put a bloody rainbow in their window to cheer a dog walker up or someone out fetching groceries then they will.
“You don’t own the rainbow.”
Meanwhile, another responded: “What do you do when there is an actual rainbow in the sky?”
Founder and CEO of Mumsnet, Justine Roberts, informed PinkNews: “There’s a huge diversity of opinion on Mumsnet, which this discussion thread illustrates pretty well.
“We’ve always believed that debate between people who disagree is healthy and useful in allowing people to see alternative points of view.”
