Lorraine Kelly has searched far and wide for a Meghan Markle lookalike, and now she has whittled the choices down to a final three, and has asked viewers to cast their votes for the winner.
The prize for the winner of the lookalike competition? A year officially on the books of the top lookalike agency Susan Scott, as they work alongside their Prince Harry lookalike.
But despite hunting all over the country for a group of lookalikes, viewers at home were far from impressed with the candidates from which they had to choose.
Viewers even mocked the show’s efforts, with many people taking to social media to complain that none of the contestants looked remotely like the Suits star.
More troublingly, they were also slammed for failing to pick a candidate from the pack that shared Meghan Markle’s mixed race background.
Unsurprisingly, or perhaps surprisingly depending on how you think about the competition, Lorraine said that the show had been overwhelmed by applications, and that it was difficult to pick a final three.
She said: “I think they’re are all great. It’s not down to me who wins I am glad to say.
“We had the hard task of whittling it down from all the entrants to the final three and now the voting lines are open.”
Viewers at home however questioned why anyone would waste their time (or their money) voting on a lookalike competition where none of the final three looked anything like Meghan.
In fact, a few of the final seven, from which the final three were chosen, looked so unlike Meghan it is almost funny (and baffling) that they chose them in the first place.
The viewers took to social media to voice their befuddlement at the choices, with one saying: “They have (sic) chosen the 3 that look the least like Meghan Markle oh dear #Lorraine.”
Another said: Meghan Markle look-a-likes on #Lorraine…ummm they look nothing like her. Red dress. Dark hair. Resemblance ends there”
A third quite simply said: “#Lorraine none of them!”
A fourth said: “None of them look anything like Meghan Markle #Lorraine.”
While a fifth said: #Lorraine please tell me no one is actually gonna ring in & vote for this”
It seems as though you’d be hard put to find a single person who had anything good about the effort to which the show had gone to find Meghan Markle lookalikes, and the social media mockery just continued like a never ending tidal wave.
One person pointed out the obvious by saying: “Only way these girls look like Meghan Markle is that they have dark hair #lorraine”
While another person sarcastically said: “Apparently the only thing you need to be a Meghan Markle lookalike is a face. #Lorraine”
Everybody seemed to have the same thought, as another person pointed out: “What’s worse about this dreadful competition is that none of them look remotely like her!! #Lorraine”
But there was a more serious issue with the three contestants, other than just the obvious fact that none of them looked remotely like Prince Harry’s girlfriend, and that was that none of the girls selected as the lookalikes were mixed race like Meghan is.
People were quick to point that out on Twitter too, with one person saying: @reallorraine can I just remind you that Meghan Markle is mixed race #Lorraine”
While another person pointed out the same issue, saying: “Eh? #Lorraine meghan markle lookalike??!! These girls look nowt like her, more importantly they are all white!”
One person pretty much summed everything up with a part of their tweet, which simply read: “omg this is a joke!”
Last week, the seven women that were in the running for the coveted position of Meghan Markle’s lookalike were revealed after Lorraine launched the show’s search last month.
To try and find out who really did have what it took to pass for the Suits star, the women went on an open top bus tour with the Prince Harry lookalike to see if any of them could actually fool the public into thinking that they were the real deal.
Whether the people on the streets were fooled or not is a little hard to tell, but one thing is for sure, and that is that the people at home were certainly not fooled by any of the lookalikes.
In fact, they said that one of them looked more like ex-Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt, and that another was more likely to pass for Strictly Judge Shirly Ballas than Markle.
Today, the seven were whittled down to the final three, and those final three were hairdresser Ashleigh Ridding, 20, from Bristol, showjumper Ria Ginley, 25, from York and and 19-year-old gap year student Emma Kaler from Cardiff.
Their reasons for thinking that they looked like Meghan? Because they’ve been told that they did by people in the past.
But however people may think about the quality of the lookalikes, there has to be a winner, and whoever that may be, they are certainly going to put their opportunity to good use.
Emma Kaler, 19, said that she was entered by her boyfriend’s grandmother, and said that if she won, she has said that she would love to use the platform given to her by the 12-month contract at the top lookalike agency to do more charity work, as well as work with women’s rights organisations.
Ria Ginley, 25, who is a full-time showjumper, said that she has always been a supporter of the royal family. She said that she thinks Meghan is a huge inspiration to other women, especially younger ladies.
And Ashleigh Ridding, 20, who is a trainee hairdresser, said that she admires Meghan’s humanitarian work.
Good luck to them, but you can’t deny that they don’t look anything like Meghan Markle, and it is a bit troubling that they couldn’t find a single mixed race woman to put her hat in the ring as a potential lookalike.
But then again, I think that the quality of these lookalikes isn’t exactly up to a huge standard anyway, I mean (and this might just be me) have you seen the Prince Harry lookalike? It’s not exactly like they were separated at birth, now is it?
