A man, just 20-years-old, survived crashing into a utility pole but was then killed when stepping out of his car and onto a power line.
Fabian Garnica survived a crash into a utility pole but then died when he stepped out of the car and onto a downed power line.
The incident took place on Saturday night when Garnica was driving on the highway in Texas with his girlfriend, Destiny Wallace.
The couple, who had been together since high school, were both injured but survived the crash into the utility pole.
However, when Garnica stepped out of the car to assess if there was any damage, he stood on a downed power line that the car had struck.
His girlfriend was later examined at the hospital and she discovered she was pregnant with Garnica’s child.
Garnica’s family has stated they are “devastated” about the accident and later gathered at the scene of the crash on Monday night to hold a vigil for the young man’s life, according to KTRK.
Flowers have now been placed by the side of the road.
The accident involved no other cars but the police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, officials are warning that it is always safer to stay inside the vehicle after a crash and call emergency services if the crash involves power lines.
Texas City EMS Director Wendall Wiley said: “If you’re in a vehicle, you need to stay inside the vehicle until we can arrive on the scene.
“We can assess and see if the power lines are still hot. If they are, we can contact the light company. Your safest place is inside the vehicle.”
