So, if you don’t know by now, news broke this morning that HRH Prince Harry and former actress Megan Markle are now officially engaged – Hurray! It’s been a long-awaited announcement by royal fans throughout the world.
With the nation overjoyed by news, viewers of This Morning were left far from impressed by the coverage on today’s show.
Presenter Holly Willoughby seemed extremely excited by the announcement, stating that the news was a ‘thing of dreams’, however, some viewers stated that they were sick and tired of the constant coverage of the Harry and Megan’s relationship over the last few weeks and enough was enough.
As the advertisement break came to an end, the classic Disney song ‘Once Upon a Dream’ from Sleeping Beauty left a bad taste in the mouths of some viewers, with many taking to Twitter to state that the constant referral to the newly engaged couple was far too sickly sweet for their liking.
Completely gushing over the news, Holly admitted that she loved the song choice which payed tribute to the couple: “Oh that’s so sweet! I mean it is the thing of dreams isn’t it!?” before adding: “She’s met her prince and she’s getting married, it’s lovely.”
Phil, on the other hand, mocked Holly for her ‘overreaction’, leaving her in a state of cringe for getting too swept up in the moment. “This is your best day” he said, as Holly erupted into fits of laughter and hid her face away from the camera.
“It really is, it really is, it’s the real life fairy-tale!” she replied.
Holly admitted that the entire cast and crew in the studio were in ‘party mode’ after the news broke earlier on this morning. Fans, however, were far from impressed by the length of time This Morning had reported on the story, with one viewer commenting that the subject was “shallow”.
One viewer tweeted: Oh I am happy for Prince Harry and Meghan, but do we have to dedicate the whole show to this? ? #ThisMorning”
‘#ThisMorning omg what a waste of a program!!! All about the royals show boring!! Really how much is there actually to discuss” another said.
“#ThisMorning I’m off to do something more exciting… some paint I need to watch dry ??” one user commented.
One furious user also wrote that today’s show was “…daytime telly at its most shallow and pointless”.
Another also continued: “It’s ridiculous.”Is this what it’s gonna be like for the next god knows how long??”
Holly commented that the engagement had been long awaited by members of the public and especially herself and was glad that there had been confirmation of the engagement at long last: “It’s just so lovely… finally” she said.
It wasn’t just Holly who was left gushing over the Royal engagement news. Other celebrities took to Twitter to congratulate the newly engaged pair.
Loose Women presenter Andrea McLaine who is about to tie the knot herself this week, tweeted: ‘So excited for them!!!!’
Whilst former Queen of Jungle and newly engaged Vicki Pattison also tweeted: ‘Eeeeeekkkkk!! Have you all heard the good news?! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged!!! Yay!!! Omg.. Imagine the BABIES!!! Too cute!!’
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway also added: ‘Wonderful news! Congratulations to them both #RoyalEngagement”.
Meanwhile, comedian Jack Whitehall thought he’d make his feelings known about attending the celebration. He wrote: ‘1. When is the stag do? 2. Can I come?’.
Even US celebs joined in on the celebrations, with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian writing: ‘Congratulations Prince Harry and Meghan Markle!’
The Queen and Prince Phillip released a statement of their very own to announce their happiness for their grandson. The pair said they are: ‘delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness’, whilst Kate and William also released the statement: ‘We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together’.
Harry and Megan officially started dating over a year ago, however rumours of an upcoming engagement broke after Megan recently resigned from her acting profession.
However, all didn’t go plain sailing this morning and those who were moaning about the coverage of the royal engagement certainly got what they wished for, as attention shifted to a hilarious blunder later on in the programme.
Holly and Phil were left red-faced when they called a very confused Mrs Smithers, to tell her that she had won £5000 from a competition she had entered, when in fact they were calling the wrong person.
As the pair sat in the studio, fellow presenter Alison Hammond eagerly waited outside the real competition winner’s home with someone dressed up as a cow – yes, really.
As Mrs Smithers answered the phone, Phil said: ‘Hello is that Mrs Ashman?’, with the unimpressed woman simply stating ‘No’.
“Oh OK… could you just look out of your door to see if there’s anyone walking up your path?,” he asked her, however, the confused woman confirmed there was no-one in sight.
Phil then made things even worse, by adding: “Well… have you moved house?” to which Holly burst into fits of laughter.
“You’re live on This Morning at the moment, I’m Phillip Schofield, this is Holly Willoughby, we were expecting someone else.” he quipped.
The phone call had to be cut short, so they could quickly get in contact with the real competition winner, and the pair obviously felt awful for giving Mrs Smithers false hope of her huge win.
Getting into the Christmas Spirit, the show thought they would give Mrs Smithers a little surprise she would never forget for causing her total embarrassment in front of the nation: “We phoned you by mistake, someone got the number wrong, it was about a competition prize and then we hung up on you and felt really guilty, so you’ve just won for absolutely no reason at all, apart from the fact we called the phone person, you’ve just won £1,000 for Christmas.”
Poor Mrs Smithers forgave the pair and told them: “Thank you, so very much I love you both!”
