With news breaking yesterday that Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle are now engaged, people from around the world were dying to hear a statement from the happy couple.
In fact, we’ve been waiting over a year to even see the pair within close proximity of one another, however, yesterday, the pair took part in a 26-minute interview discussing how they met, their whirlwind romance and their future plans, now they are set to be man and wife.
It was extremely evident within the first few minutes that Meghan had a confident air about her, in comparison to Kate Middleton who appeared shy and reserved when she appeared in front of the camera on the announcement of her engagement to Prince William back in 2010.
People from across the globe who tuned into the BBC interview, took to Twitter to discuss whether they preferred Kate or Meghan and the result may not be who you’d expect.
Despite facing the public for the very first time yesterday, it seems Meghan has won a place in the hearts of the viewers – with many even favouring the newbie royal family member over Kate.
A few Twitter comments included:
‘Forget Kate…Meghan’s my new favourite’ one user said.
‘Oh my god wow, the news of their engagement dropped like an hour ago but i’m already saying harry/meghan > William/kate’ i’M SORRY another commented.
‘Meghan is so much more than Kate’ another said.
Whilst another added: ‘I’ve never watched Suits, but Meghan strikes me as so confident and well-spoken. Night and day with Kate and Diana. #usausa’
However, many of those who are favouring Kate, have stated that Meghan’s confidence is most-likely down to the fact that she’s been involved in the entertainment industry for a number of years and is therefore used to the media spotlight.
One user who seemed to be on ‘Team Kate’ wrote: “Meghan being more open than Catherine was is coz (sic) of her background dealing with media. Kate was more shy. # RoyalEngagement”
Many viewers also noticed how the body language of Harry and Meghan was extremely different to the way in which Will and Kate conducted themselves back in 2010. During the interview yesterday, viewers were left gushing as Harry and Meg held hands while looking into each other’s eyes romantically as they spoke.
Will and Kate, on the other hand, were much more traditional in their approach; sitting a slight distance apart and with absolutely no sign of public affection.
Harry and Meghan were also notably much more relaxed in front of the camera, having a laugh and a joke, rather than remaining deadly serious as typical royal announcements usually are.
Discussing the way in which Harry proposed, Meghan said the entire moment was simple and ‘romantic’: “It was a cozy night. We were roasting chicken. It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee. I could barely let you finish proposing. I said, ‘can I say yes now?'”
Harry also stated that although Meghan was a well-known actress in the US, he had never heard or seen of her: “I had never watched Suits… and I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. I was like, ‘OK well I’m going to have to really up my game here’,” he said.
Viewers were left gushing over Harry’s romantic words for his new fiance, telling interviewer Mishal Husain: “The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect. This beautiful woman just tripped and fell into my life, I fell into her life.” he said. “It was I think about three maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars.”
Meghan was also asked what it feels like to never have the opportunity of meeting Harry’s mother, Princess Diana: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness is – and the inclusion of that and obviously not being able to meet his mom it’s so important to me to – to know that she’s a part of this with us.”
“And I think in being able to meet his aunts and – and also like Julia and just different people who were so important to his mom, I’m able to, in some way, know a part of her through them and of course through him. And it’s – it’s incredibly special. And you know to be able to have this which sort of links where you come from and Botswana which is important to us and it’s – it’s perfect.”
Discussing his experience of talking to the happy couple on The One Show, interviewer Mishal Husain said: “I had a bit of time with them ahead of us recording the interview, so we talked a bit in that time as well. The overall I came away with is clearly they’re a couple very much in love. You can see the bond between them, it’s there in the body language. But I also was really struck that this is a couple who had to decide really early on in their relationship whether or not this has potential.”
Many people also presume that now Meghan’s set to marry a prince, she’ll automatically become a princess, however, this isn’t the case.
If Harry chooses to become a Duke, Meghan will become a Duchess – most likely the Duchess of Sussex, according to sources. If Harry chooses to remain a prince, she’ll not be titled Princess Meghan, as many may have expected. The princess title is solely for those with royal blood only. Also, as she is a divorcee, this could also get in the way of the title she will be given.
The couple are set to marry next Spring, however, a date has not yet been confirmed. An MP has urged Theresa May to set a bank holiday to honour the big day, in the same manner as Kate and Will’s wedding in 2011.
Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell said: “Did we have one for William and Kate? I think we did, so why not Harry? Harry must get one too. Let’s make it a great royal celebration”.
