Former Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt has gushed about her love for ITV presenter Ant McPartlin a few months ago as fans of the pair are urging them to get together since the I’m A Celeb host’s much publicised divorce.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Ant McPartlin and his wife of eleven years Lisa Armstrong were set to divorce after a 23 year relationship.
Their relationship had been under strain for several months ever since Ant was admitted to rehab last year for addictions to alcohol and prescription medication.
In a statement released to The Sun on Sunday, Ant’s spokesman said: “In response to the recent speculation in the media, Ant is very sad to announce that, after 11 years, he is ending his marriage to Lisa McPartlin.
“Ant asks for privacy at this difficult time, for both himself, Lisa and their immediate families. No further statement will be made.”
Ant, who also hosts Saturday night takeaway with his long time presenting partner Declan Donnelly, is estimated to be worth £62 million, after more than two decades on our screens.
A source close to Ant said: “This was a tough decision for Ant but he has to do the right thing for his health.
“It hasn’t happened overnight. They’ve been having problems for ages.
“The marriage has effectively been struggling for eight months. He’s given it a good go.
“They’ve met up and spoken about it a number of times and this is the decision he has made.
“They are getting divorced. He is obviously really upset about it.”
Sources close to the couple, however, believe that Ant is looking out for what is best for wife Lisa, saying: The source said: “Ant’s big concern in the whole thing is Lisa and making it as easy as possible for her.
“He will obviously look after her in the settlement. There is no doubt about that.
“He wants it to be amicable and friendly.
“Ant and Lisa have been together for over 20 years and married for 11. They’re best friends. She’s always stood by him and been supportive.
“The fact they’re divorcing is no reflection on her.”
However, fans thought that the I’m A Celebrity host and last year’s I’m A Celebrity winner Scarlett looked close as they chatted and giggled together with Declan Donnelly at this year’s National Television Awards.
And it seems as though Scarlett, 27, who found fame on the universally loved Channel 4 programme Gogglebox, who also hosted this year’s I’m A Celebrity spin off show and has a recurring role in Saturday Night Takeway, has all the admiration in the world for Ant.
In an interview before the ITV crew jetted to Australia she said: “They [Ant and Dec] are my absolute heroes, it gives me the confidence to just be me.
“If they have faith in me, I must be doing something half decent.”
During the spin off show she also spoke regarding the fact of how Ant keeps his watch covered so that camp mates don’t know what time it is, explaining: ‘It’s so the campmates don’t know the time, so all the watches are covered for the people that see the campmates all the time.”
During the National Television Awards, Scarlett joined Ant and Dec on stage as they collected their award and viewers noticed Ant with his arm around her shoulders while Dec walked with his hand on her back as they walked across the stage.
As the camera panned across them, National Television Awards viewers impishly suggested that there might just be more than meets the eye to all this.
“Here’s a suggestion. Ant Mcpartlin and Scarlett Moffat should get together. What a beautiful couple,” one tweeted.
“Is it just me or does Scarlett Moffat look like a young Lisa Armstrong? Seems friendly with Ant. Watch this space!” wrote another.
And a third cheekily tweeted: “I reckon Ant will end up with Scarlett. There, I’ve said it.”
Scarlett recently praised Ant and Dec for helping her to get the better of her nerves as she got ready to present I’m A Celebrity’s spin off show Extra Camp, as she admitted that she was worried as to how she would come across.
“They just said ‘be you’, which coming from them, when they are my absolute heroes, gives me the confidence to just be me,” she told the Star.
“If they have faith in me, I must be doing something half decent – it’s like my mum and dad are here.”
It came after the Sunday Mirror revealed that Scarlett was one of the first people that Ant phoned when he came out of rehab, where he had been for an eight-week course to battle his addictions.
After he left, he and Scarlett talked “non-stop” and friends said she was being a “great support” to Ant, while he was there for her after she split from boyfriend Luke Crodden.
However, in the wake of the divorce proceedings, Lisa Armstrong has appeared to drop somewhat of a hint about how their relationship came to an end.
She stood by him through his rehab stint, and now Lisa seems to think that there is more than this split than meets the eye.
The Strictly Come Dancing make up boss liked a tweet from a supportive fan, who claimed she herself had been through a battle with prescription pills.
The tweet read: “After 2 years coming off prescribed pain meds my hubby took the back lash, the moaning, the mood swings, the full crap but 18yrs of marriage, loyalty and LOVE& were still together,I think Ant is hiding something or someone so sorry huni.”
Lisa, whose Twitter account is public, “hearted” the tweet as well as a string of other supportive messages, as well as liking a message sent by someone who pointed out that the “grass isn’t greener” on the other side of a divorce.
Lisa had then favourited a tweet that included the line: “One day they’ll realise they lost a diamond while playing with worthless stones.”
However Ant’s spokesman furiously denied speculation that the Geordie presenter was in any way romantically involved with Scarlett Moffatt, after viewers took a notice to their “chemistry” at the National Television Awards recently
His rep slammed the claims as “total bulls**t”, as fans took to Twitter to remark on what a “beautiful couple” they made.
