We most associate David Jason living in a high-rise flat due to playing the character role of Del Boy Trotter, but in fact, the reality is completely different. You’ll be shocked at the exact location and property where the legendary actor lives.
It’s not just his home that somewhat differs from David’s actual life, but according to Julia Maloney, the confident and outgoing Del Boy is a far cry from his real personality.
Writing for The Independent, Maloney wrote: “I must admit I’m a bit surprised by how grandfatherly David Jason is. I mean, I shouldn’t be. He is 79. But he had remained frozen in my mind around the 50-year mark.
‘He’s always insisted he’s shy. In fact, he says, it was shyness that propelled him into acting.’ she added, while, David went on to tell her: “I was not driven by fame and fortune. It was the need to do it for it’s own sake, because … I tell you what I think was the reason why – I was very low in self-esteem. I was a very shy sort of person, and by acting different characters, I could immerse myself and make them do what perhaps I wouldn’t do.”
Maloney goes on to suggest that David was so set on becoming an actor, that he dedicated the whole of his young life to getting himself the career he had always dreamed of; putting his social and romantic relationships on hold.
4. Where does David Jason live?
David is one of the most notable people to live in the town of Ellesborough, in Buckinghamshire. A small, remote village, this civil parish has an extremely small population – last noted to be 811 back in 2001.
This picturesque village isn’t home to just one celebrity though, as it has also been reported that former Formula One Driver Jackie Stewart once lived there.
Born in Scotland and nicknamed ‘The Flying Scott’, Jackie competed in Formula One between 1965-1973, in which he won three World Drivers’ Championships.
Not only did he participate in the sport, but he also had major impacts on the way in which Formula One was managed in terms of health and safety; urging amendments to be made when it came to medical facilities as well as adjustments to the tracks to reduce the number of accidents.
He campaigned that drivers should be wearing seatbelts at all times, as well as being given full face helmets to prevent further injury.
Just outside of Ellesborough is also where the Prime Minister’s Country Residence is located and Theresa May will no doubt be inviting Donald Trump over for a cup of tea or two.
While it’s much more interesting that the legendary Sir David Jason lives within the village (this fact is what Ellesborough is perhaps best known for). Located just outside of the village, the county residence is a 16th-century manor house known as Chequers. There are only a few places around the area to pay a visit to due to the remote location – the Beacon Hill which is great for climbing, a picturesque old church and a pub to grab a pint, but that’s as far as it goes in terms of ‘things to do’.
There have also been many other celebrities who live in and around the Aylesbury Vale which have included the likes of former ‘Loose Woman’ and Oxo Cube advert star, Lynda Bellingham who lived in the Aylesbury Vale. The star tragically passed away from colon cancer back in 2014, however, the area named a new road after her entitled ‘Bellingham Way’ so she will always be a part of the community.
3. Sir David Jason on Living in Ellesborough
While David Jason could choose pretty much any destination in the entire world to call home, he recently admitted that he wouldn’t dream of living anywhere else other than Buckinghamshire.
“I love where we live,” he told the website ‘Berkshire Life and Buckinghamshire Life’. “It’s got great transport links into London and it’s so pleasant and green. I think, over time, you definitely mould yourself into a place, and that’s definitely the case here. I certainly couldn’t see myself living anywhere else now.”
Although he’s a huge star, this hasn’t stopped Sir David from getting involved with the local community. Meeting a woman with MS, he aimed to give the village a medical centre to give those suffering from the condition a place to find help and assistance.
“I opened the new centre in September 2012 and it has been a really important thing to be involved in. People talk about actors using their influence and I think the public can become a bit untrusting of it, but this was something genuinely from the heart and if I can’t use my status for something productive and important like that, then what can I use it for?
“And the big thing for me was that it was local – that’s really why I got involved. I was quite moved by the woman who was fighting to get a proper centre for MS sufferers, so I thought I’d throw my hat in.” he said.
David was married to actress Myfanwy Talog for eighteen years, until her tragic death from breast cancer in 1995, however, the actor went on to have a second chance at love when he met Gill Hinchcliffe who became his wife in 1995.
The pair had a daughter named Sophie, born in 2001.
2. Sir David Immersing Himself in Village Life
We’ve already seen the amazing work that Sir David immerses himself into when it comes to his community, however, the legendary actor was also spotted out on the streets with the public celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee a few years back.
Captured by the paps, he was seen to be truly enjoying the spirit of the occasion, as members of the public wore hats and waved flags in celebration. A little later on in the day, he was also expected to cut the ribbon in the street to open Ellesborough’s special procession.
The parade involved children riding on bicycles, decorated lorries and even a tractor or two – definitely the typical countryside parade you’d expect in a village like Ellesborough.
David certainly kept the fans happy as he posed with fans and signed autographs for those in the crowd, so it was a truly memorable occasion for all those in attendance.
There’s no doubt his young daughter was also in attendance at the event and despite not having her in his life until the age of 61, fatherhood has no doubt changed his life for the better.
Now aged 78 and his daughter Sophie Mae at just 17, the large age gap certainly hasn’t got in the way of their wonderful relationship, but worries about the nature of television and the humour that is now being used in front of children.
“It’s a real worry about how to protect your kids from seeing things that you don’t want them to see,” Sir David said to the Express during an interview in 2013.
“We were all watching Miranda the other day when there were a few asides that made me feel a little uncomfortable.
“It’s a shame if you can’t all enjoy watching TV together without worrying what some comedian is going to say that’s going to be embarrassing.”
David’s wife Gill also added that it’s not just television that parents should be aware of when it comes to safeguarding children, but also the use of mobile phones at a young age.
“We gave Sophie a mobile but it broke and I took her to get a new one, it was only in the shop that I realised she wanted an iPhone; I said no. It would have given her access to too much that might be inappropriate.” she said.
1.David Jason’s Home
Set in acres of land, David’s mansion is the perfect family home for him, his wife Gill and their daughter Sophie. Although the village of Ellesborough is quite relaxed and low-key, this home certainly is not.
As you can see from these birds-eye view photos below, the property is set amongst fields and showcases a large driveway – if you look closely enough, you can also see that there is a separate building to the side of the property – perhaps a hideaway or something of that nature for chilling?
Unlike the urban backdrop in Only Fools and Horses, David was also spotted sitting on his fence in the midst of the countryside – a truly beautiful location by the looks of things.
If you really want to know more about David’s home life, it may be best to grab a copy of his recent autobiography entitled ‘My Life’. Talking to ‘Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Life’ about the book, he said: “It’s me coming out and saying things in my own words, finally,” he laughs. “There’s a lot of humour in there and I wanted things spoken with my voice, not someone looking in from the outside. To be honest, I was reluctant to do the autobiography – for a few reasons really.
“I’m quite a private person, and there were elements in there I knew I’d have to cover – like my late partner Myfanwy passing away – that I was understandably cautious about.
David Jason’s home“But at the end of the day I really like how it has come out. It’s honest, good fun and it’s how I would like things told, so it’s a good result, definitely.”
