It looks like 2019 will be a huge year for film…
With 2018 coming rapidly to an end, and with most of us all clocking off for a well earned break today, it’s time to take a look at what movie-magic 2019 will bring and which films we will be rushing to the cinema to see. 2018 itself has seen it’s own fair share of hits, with Marvel hitting us with 2 huge releases in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, both taking over a staggering $3 billion at the box office, whilst Tom Cruise and co. stunned us again with Mission: Impossible Fallout with halo dives and helicopter death scenes. We’ve also seen an incredible directorial debut and silver screen debut from Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born and we’ve also followed Ryan Gosling to the moon and back as Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s visually stunning First Man.
But, like everything, all good things must come to an end, and whilst we have been treated to a great year of cinema this year, it is fair to say that next year’s line up is nothing short of phenomenal, let’s take a look at what will likely be the top 5 films of 2019.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
As if the stellar cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino and Dakota Fanning wasn’t enough to get us excited, then the idea of Quentin Tarrentino taking on one of America’s most notorious events, the Manson Murders, surely will be. The story follows a faded TV actor and his stunt double, as they embark on a quest to make a name for themselves in the film industry during Manson’s Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles.
Earlier this year, Sony Pictures whet our collective appetites for the film by releasing the first official image of the film, and unsurprisingly, the simple still of Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio above, was more than enough to get us talking about it. The trailer is still yet to be released and I personally love the fact that a lot of the plot is still being kept under wraps. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is set for a UK release in July 2019 by Sony Pictures.
Joaquin Phoenix is the latest actor to be taking on the hugely popular comic book villain, The Joker, in what will surely be DC’s biggest film of 2019. Directed by Todd Phillips and set in Gotham during the 1970s, Joker, will be giving us the mother of all origin stories by showing how The Joker became the Clown Prince Of Crime, and follows his journey from a failed stand up comedian to Batman’s arch-nemesis. The film has already garnered some controversy online, with many comic book fans feeling as though giving an origin to The Joker, and crucially, revealing his name as Arthur Fleck takes away part of his alluring and menacing unpredictability.
Having said that, the images and videos that Phillips has been releasing for the film show Phoenix’s version of The Joker to be every bit as creepy as we’d all hoped and as Phoenix has proven over the last few years, if anyone can take on a role of such magnitude, he can! Joker will be released by DC in October 2019.
A few weeks ago, we were delighted to be able to share the brand new trailer for Avengers: Endgame, as Marvel finally put fans out of their misery. Marvel released Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year and since then, fans of the superhero franchise had been waiting and waiting for details of the eagerly anticipated sequel to emerge and it soon became one of the most talked about topics on social media. They even subtly dropped in the title for the sequel, Endgame, at the end of trailer. Clever aren’t they!
With so many possibilities and secrets that are left over from Infinity War, understandably the plot has been kept hugely under wraps as Tony Stark’s group of superheroes look to defeat Thanos, but as you can tell from the trailer below, Marvel have once again got us holding our breaths for as much info as possible.
Avengers: Endgame is set for release in April 2019 by Walt Disney Studios.
Toy Story 4
Disney are set to have arguably, the biggest year in the company’s incredible history next year with Avengers: Endgame, Dumbo and of course, Toy Story 4. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and co. are all returning for the fourth instalment of the franchise, the first of which was released back in 1995 and whilst again, the information on the film is being kept as quiet as possible, the official Disney synopsis says: “Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy”.
So, Toy Story pals on a road trip…yeah I think that’ll be a huge hit! There have been a few posters and teasers released so far by Disney, but as I mentioned before, they don’t give a huge amount away and personally, I’m all for that! Whatever happens in the film, I think it’s fair to say that Toy Story 4 will be one of the biggest films of the year and another huge success for Disney. Toy Story 4 is set for release in June 2019 by Walt Disney Studios and I’m sure it will be the perfect summer movie.
The Lion King
It’s fair to say that when Disney released the first official trailer about a month ago, the internet exploded with a mixture of excitement and nostalgia ahead of arguably, the biggest film of 2019. Directed by Jon Favreau, who previously wowed us all with his live-action version of The Jungle Book, and featuring an all star cast including Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Billy Eichner, The Lion King will be the latest addition to Disney’s live-action remakes of their most beloved films.
And just in case that wasn’t enough to get you excited, there are also 2 more names to add the glistening list above…James Earl Jones is returning as the voice of Mufasa and Beyonce will be voicing Nala, so if anyone had been able to keep their cool up until now, I apologise. Favreau’s ridiculously talented and diverse cast is one thing but as you can tell, the sheer quality of the animation is also just such a joy to behold. As soon as you see the sun rise in the trailer above, and hear Jones’ voice, you can just tell that The Lion King will be just as magical as the original. The Lion King is set for release in July 2019 by Disney and in my opinion, will be come the biggest film of the year.
