Viewers of This Morning were left in shock on yesterday’s show as Phillip Schofield suffered a medical emergency live on the show.
During a segment, Phil was expected to eat the world’s hottest crisp, after Alison Hammond came on the show to discuss this year’s ‘I’m A Celeb’ line-up – and what creepy crawlies the celebs may be digesting this year.
Covered in Carolina Reaper seasoning, which is said to be one of the hottest peppers in the world, Phil engulfed the crisp, as the the crew watched in the wings with a sick bucket – should the worst case scenario occur.
Whilst viewers were left hiding behind their hands, Phil appeared to sweat and look slightly alarmed by the sensations he was feeling. [Scroll to bottom for video]
After digesting, he said: “It’s interesting because it starts off with a chilli flavour and it gets hotter and hotter. I can feel my pores opening up around my face. My tongue is really really on fire now, and it’s getting worse. It’s building.”
In a state of panic, the presenter shouted: “There’s a hole in my tongue!” It’s like there is a burning fire in my mouth. My tongue feels like it’s out of Stranger Things. I’ve got a massive great big fiery tongue.”
“This is quite alarming now” he added. “I have to say that it’s now passing from here and I can now feel it in my stomach and it’s quite uncomfortable. It’s quite a burny feeling in my stomach. Maybe a little bit sicky.”
However, it was an impressive eight minutes before paramedics were called to attend to the ‘unwell’ presenter. Apparently, people all over the globe are carrying out the same challenge, to see how long they can last before having to give in and grab a glass of milk to control the immense pain.
It was reported that upon leaving the set, Phil had experienced strange side effects, due to the monstrosity he had just digested. He claimed that he had suffered a burning mouth and throat, runny nose and bloodshot eyes.
He was then told to drink a full glass of milk to sooth the acid, before puking in the toilet on set. “I’ve had to do that to stop it really wrecking my stomach.” he explained.
During today’s show, Holly asked Phil how he got on after yesterday’s show came to an end.
“My whole body was grumbling, like, ‘what the hell did you just do and why?'” he confessed, before adding that he didn’t feel his normal self until around 3.30pm that afternoon.
However, despite being only 10.30am when most folk would be eating their breakfast, Holly took it one step too far, as she asked her co-presenter about his experience of passing the fiery food out of his body:. “Let’s just say, I had a bum like a dragon’s nostril.” Phil quipped, before the pair broke down in hysterics.
Holly admitted she had let Phil take the huge plunge, due to puking live-on-air after sipping Tabasco. Her catastrophe ended in having to seek medical attention – so, looks like she got off lucky this time.
One Twitter user commended the presenter and stated that he was the “ninja of daytime TV.”
Phillip got a little hot under the collar again today, (for a different reason entirely) as a teacher appeared on the show to discuss the fact that he had accidentally branded a girl in his class as a ‘she’, despite the fact that the student identified as transgender.
He admitted it was simply a ‘slip of the tongue’ moment which never should have happened, however, although he made the mistake just once in class, he was suspended after the mother of the child made a complaint against him and now faces losing his job.
However, things really heated up when Andrea Williams, chief executive of Christian concern branded the whole transgender issue as simply a ‘”fad” that may be overcome over a period of time.
Phil questioned the woman: “So in your eyes, it’s not possible to be born in the wrong body?”
Talking to the presenters, she said: “No. We are born male and female. We can’t change that. Surgery can’t change that. And actually the kindest thing we can do in that situation is to help the child with the gender identity disorder and usually a number of other comorbidities, help them to live in the body that they have,”
“Very often when we see children who are identifying as homosexual, very often it’s not good for them to live out in such a lifestyle. It’s not good for them to be highly sexual. The best thing you can do for a little child that is gender confused is actually to help them live in the body that they are”
Phil didn’t seem to be having any of it, as he unusually snapped back to the guest: “Are you saying that transgender is not a reality? I’m finding this utterly abhorrent…We’ll get back to the show and back to 2017 instead of medieval Britain.”
However, whilst some were praising Phil for standing up for the transgender community, others were outraged that he had completely shut-down a guest for giving her own opinion on the topic.
One viewer tweeted: “@Schofe an awful response to Christian view this morning Mr Schofield. Isn’t everyone entitled to an opinion without being verbally attacked on tv?”
“Oh Mr @Schofe that crude last comment about not being in medieval times was unnecessary Sir, the man said sorry and is paying the price for it. Your a great inteviewer but even that has to be admitted as a low blow. Is that not enough? #ThisMorning #misgendered” another wrote.
However, those in Phil’s favour also had their say. One viewer commented:
“@thismorning thank you for standing up for transgender children. I was disgusted by the comments from your ‘Christian’ guests. I am glad the school have addressed this. They are acknowledging the needs of their pupils. Well done Philip and Holly! #ThisMorning”.
