Holly and Phil were moved to tears on last week’s show when a 10-year-old boy with autism made a huge impact when he claimed to be the show’s biggest fans and had dreams of one day becoming a presenter himself. [SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR VIDEO]
The young boy named Micheal Glaister was diagnosed with the autism as a toddler but contacted the show asking if he could have their ‘This Morning’ mugs. The video went viral and caught the attention of bosses at ITV, who invited the youngster onto the show.
Michael and his mum Charlene were invited to it on the sofa to chat to his heroes, Holly and Phil about his dreams of becoming a presenter and why he is such a fan of the daytime show.
After the advertisement break, Michael opened the segment with his own graphics, which read: “The Michael Glaister Show”. Talking to the camera, he said: “Welcome back to The Michael Glaister Show still to come; Dr Chris is here and we take you to Italy.”
Holly joked that he was ‘much more professional’ than them and Phil also quipped that he now had competition and would be sure to steal his job when he turned eighteen.
Charlene revealed that the moment was very special for the little boy who was unable to speak until a few years ago, but the show had helped him ‘find his voice’. Beforehand, he had communicated only by using pictures and writing down his thoughts.
“He was non-verbal until a few years ago.” his mum, Charlene, explained. When asked how Michael had learned to speak, Charlene replied: “Just by role-playing and pretending to present and watching the shows he enjoys.”
She claimed that watching his three favourite shows – This Morning, The Jeremy Kyle Show and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! had helped him with speech progression.
Phil told Charlene: “There are lots of people over years and said television is a bad influence but right here this has been a fantastic influence.”
She went on to say that during a family holiday to Turkey, Michael had the confidence to get up on a stage and perform his own show in front of holidaymakers.
“It’s made a big difference. He’s more confident now and he’s got more speech.” she added.
On behalf of the This Morning team, Phil presented the little boy with a brand-new iPad as his sister had smashed his old one, which he would sit and watch This Morning on each morning.
He also gifted him a personalised ITV cover for the iPad which he, himself used on the show, telling Michael: “As you are a TV presenter now and you are going to take over my job when you’re 18, we have our tablets here with our special backing for them and that is now yours.”
“Nobody in the world has one of those other than us two” he went on to say, before Holly told Phil: “Well, not even you now”, before turning to Michael, saying: “It’s just you and me, which is exactly how it will be in 18 years”.
The gifts didn’t stop there. Holly and Phil then went on to surprise the pair with a whole hamper of goodies which included the likes of personalised water bottles, signed pictures and This Morning cue cards for the aspiring little presenter. They were also given tickets to Madame Tussauds in London.
Michael’s face lit up and viewers had tears in their eyes when the little boy got up from his seat and hugged the two presenters to say thank you.
Viewers of the show took to social media to express how touched they were by the segment.
