Cheryl returned to the public eye for the very first time in over four years this weekend, as she took to the X Factor stage to perform her brand-new single, Love Made Me Do It.
Cheryl was once part of the X Factor judging line-up, but quit seven years ago to concentrate on her own solo career.
Fans were left in shock by her live rendition of the track, however, it was reported that bosses of the reality show were ‘concerned’ about it during rehearsals earlier in the day, claiming that it was deemed fairly unsuitable ‘for family viewing’.
This came as no surprise to fans who had viewed her music video, as it had extremely similar content to the routine being performed on Sunday evening. Producers of the show were worried she would end up “writhing around on the ground with 12 hot men”.
According to a source from The Sun, Cheryl was intending to give a performance that would shock and leave a lasting impression in viewer’s minds.
“Cheryl wants this performance to be remembered and it will be.” they said. “She has been in rehearsals for the last few days and the routine will see her writhing around on the ground with 12 hot men dancing around her.
“At one point there were fears the male dancers may (have too much) showing but now it seems they will be more covered up.”
While the routine would make great entertainment for many, bosses feared they would get complaints from audience members with young families, who would be tuning in to watch the show, pre-watershed.
Cheryl hoped that the performance could give the single a much-needed boos,t as it landed in the charts at a mere number 19 last week. She told The Guardian that if her album doesn’t do well, she may decide to leave the music industry for good.
“If the song goes in at 80 [in the charts], it’s time for me to move on with my life.” she said.”I’m not going to jump around working hard and spending time away from my son for that.”
Talking to The Sun about the upcoming X Factor performance last week, a source said: “Inevitably, all of the big TV shows have been fighting to get Cheryl’s first performance as it will be a huge ratings winner. But she has decided to remain loyal to The X Factor rather than give the exclusive to its rival, BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
“And Cheryl will be pulling out all of the stops to make sure that this is one of her most talked-about performances to date.”
Fans were left ‘disgusted’ by the performance
Some who tuned into the show on Sunday evening were ‘disgusted’ by the performance, so it seemed that bosses had every right to be concerned about the public reaction.
The performance which was shown before the standard watershed was slammed by viewers who believed the choreography just wasn’t suitable for the time of the evening. Others commented that her vocals weren’t exactly up to scratch.
Nile Rogers, who is currently standing in for Robbie Williams was shown refusing to give a standing ovation, while the rest of the judging panel stood up for applause.
The new mum was captured crawling on the floor, even licking her hand seductively within the routine. She was then seeing rubbing up to hunky men that many, may suggest was a little cringy.
It isn’t the first time The X Factor has faced criticism for their raunchy performances. Back in 2010, the show fell into trouble when both Rihanna and Christina Aguilera’s routines were reported to Ofcom by thousands of annoyed viewers.
Many notice that Cheryl’s face has dramatically changed
Last week, fans were concerned about Cheryl’s seemingly new face, with many claiming that she must have had cosmetic surgery since her last public appearance. Yet, the new mum claimed that she had had no professional work done, but had in fact, seen a natural difference herself after giving birth to her son Bear, two years ago.
“My whole body, even my face, everything’s changed since Bear was born.” she said. “But I feel like I’m better than who I was. I don’t care what my body looks like in that respect. I created a life! I’m amazed by myself. And I’m kinder to myself because of it. I focus less on my insecurities, because they’re so much less relevant’ she said.”
A cosmetic surgeon in an interview with The Sun gave his professional opinion on Cheryl’s new face, stating that there had definitely been some intervention: “In my opinion, Cheryl has had cheek fillers as her cheekbones appear more fuller and defined. I would say she has also had some Botox and lip fillers.”
Social media reactions
“It’s a shame because if she had mimed it wouldn’t be good enough and the fact she sang live wasn’t good enough. There’s no pleasing some people. I thought her performance was excellent and yes vocals little shakey at times but hey I couldn’t sing if I danced like she did. So well done Cheryl great relaunch of career. I loved it.”
“I don’t think there was anything wrong with her singing or dancing. She just looked like she was having fun. People can’t win if she was miming people would be moaning she didn’t sing live in a live show”.
“There was nothing wrong with the performance. It’s obvious that’s she not the strongest singer but you have to admit she’s just got it!”
“I’m sorry but I like Cheryl but I think her performance was awful and she is just making a fool of herself? Get yourself a new day job?”
“I’m no singer! Will never say different! But she sounded awful! The song isn’t anything special at all! Yes she’s beautiful but she became famous for something she can not do!”
“Are they really surprised?? She’s always been absolutely awful, now it’s just painful to watch… anyone who considers Cheryl a good singer needs to have a word with themselves”.
“Cheryl licking her hand tattoo is about as appealing as this performance/song”.
“I just don’t understand? Cheryl? Can she even sing? … bizarre”.
“Not sure if it’s the sound or she just can’t sing, but this sounds bad”.
“Haha Nile Rogers is VERY cool about denying Cheryl a standing ovation – every performance should be judged on its merits after all! #XFactor.”
“Nile is iconic for not standing up for Cheryl… #Xfactor.”
