A dentist has shared a warning over a bizarre ‘teeth shaving’ trend that is taking TikTok by storm.
It involves people filing down their teeth – which is an irreversible and permanent process – so they have a shiny, white smile.
After seeing the viral trend, dentist Shaadi Manouchehri took to the social media platform and clarified that these aren’t ‘veneers’.

She said: “Those are not veneers, those are full coverage crowns.
“Shaving teeth down to pegs like that is going to damage the nerve, and you’re gonna need a root canal treatment and an extraction at some point in your life.”
Manouchehri went on to add that ‘veneers or crowns will need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years, typically’.
Showing an example video of the procedure, she continued: “Now, she is a gorgeous young woman.
“I think she’s what, around 18 or 19 maximum – and she is gonna need to replace them probably four or five times throughout her lifetime, if not more.”
She added: “She’s a gorgeous lady and she’s just ruined her teeth.
“She’s gonna have dentures by the age of 40.”

Manouchehri also explained the difference between veneers and crowns in more detail.
Essentially, veneers are bonded to the front of teeth and leave the majority intact. Crowns are more invasive and require quite a lot of teeth to be filed down, which leaves them looking like pegs.
This isn’t the only TikTok trend that dentists are warning people not to try out.
Recently, people have also said they’ve been filing down their teeth with ‘nail files’.
Addressing the trend, a dentist warned: “Our teeth are made up of layers. If you destroy your enamel by filing down your teeth you will never get it back.
“You may end up with extreme tooth sensitivity or even cause enough damage to kill the tooth. A dead tooth needs extensive and expensive treatment if you want to keep it.
“Don’t consider doing this, seriously.”
