Janelle Monáe, the multi-talented musician, actress, and artist, was the creative mind—and face—behind this iconic E.T. transformation.
Known for pushing boundaries in her fashion and performance choices, Monáe has always been an artist unafraid to break out of the mold.
For the holiday, the 38-year-old artist recreated the iconic look of E.T., the famous character from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
“You finally came home. Welcome back E.T. Thank you Google Maps. Starring yours truly as both E.T. & Janellllliot,” Monáe, who uses she/her and they/them pronouns, captioned photos of the intricate costume on Instagram.
Monáe’s E.T. costume has also appeared in the Halloween episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show.
A preview clip showed Monáe greeting host Jennifer Hudson while fully in character.
“I never would’ve guessed I would’ve got to meet E.T.,” Hudson says in the clip, to which Monáe responds with a glowing prosthetic finger and a repeated greeting in Hudson’s name.
Hudson, visibly thrilled, then tells the audience: “E.T. knows my name. Thank you for coming to the happy place. I don’t know if I should say Janelle or E.T.,” prompting Monáe to reply: “E.T. is Janelle Monáe.”
