Aldi’s vegan bacon has caused a stir over the supermarket’s choice of name for the product.

The new food item costs £2.19 for 10 slices, but some shoppers weren’t happy that a meat-free product had the term ‘bacon’ in it.

The budget chain announced the new arrival in a post on Facebook, which read: “Who said vegan needs to be boring (and expensive)? Not us,” alongside a picture advertising the new product.

In the comments section, one angry shopper said: “Call it something else, bacon is a choice of MEAT. Simples!”

A second wrote: “If it’s not meat then it’s not pork, beef, chicken, bacon etc! It needs to be called streaky rashers only. It’s as laughable as the ‘Vegetarian Butcher!’

“Each to their own, if you want to be vegetarian- that’s fine but manufacturers need to stop using meat-related words to advertise their products.”

A third said: “Getting p***ed off with this now. You don’t want to eat meat so why the hell would you want to eat a product that resembles it?”

However, others poked fun at those who were annoyed.

One Facebook user wrote: “I envy the people whose biggest worry in life is what Aldi are calling their fake bacon.”

Another added: “All the meat-eaters on here getting their panties in a twist. ‘Call it what it is,’ ‘Why call it bacon if it’s not?’ ‘Why does it have to look like meat if you don’t like meat?’

“Nobody is trying to take your bacon away from you Keith and Karen, don’t worry you’re not losing any rights here.”
