Alison Hammond angered This Morning viewers on Friday when she said her co-host Dermot O’Leary was having a ‘well-earned break,’ despite the fact he only works on the show one day a week.

The presenter caused a stir in her opening monologue, saying: “As you can see I’m joined by the wonderful Josie Gibson today as Dermot is on a well-deserved day off today.

“He’s having a little break, but I’m because it means we’ve got you.”

Taking to Twitter, one viewer scoffed at this, writing: “Dermot’s having a well-earned break? He only co-hosts once a week #ThisMorning.”

A second penned: “Dermot is having a day off. Yeah, because he was really working hard for the money between Monday and Thursday on #ThisMorning, wasn’t he(?)”

Others pointed out that they were happy to see him replaced by Gibson as she is a ‘natural’ who ‘doesn’t crave the limelight’.

“Josie, should always be the understudy,” wrote one viewer. “She is just fantastic & doesn’t crave the limelight.”

Another wrote: “Yay Josie is on instead of Dermot. Alison and Josie are a brilliant team. Genuinely seem to like one another. It seemed too forced with Dermot and he talks over Alison too much!”

“Alison & Josie are such a delight to watch, please let this be a regular thing,” said a third.

A fourth penned: “If Alison and Josie did every Friday I’d watch it again on Friday. Just caught the last of it today and they are brilliant soooo much better than the chap on a Friday much better chemistry.”

Hammond and O’Leary replaced Eamonn Holmes and his wife Ruth Langsford last year.

At the time, a source told The Sun: “No one wants to see them go. The show’s execs have some very tricky decisions.

“Eamonn fears he is basically too ‘pale, stale and male’, and, at 60, perhaps not in line with the youth drive broadcasters are after.”
