Animal shelter staff are warning that stray and old dogs may have to be put down, as lockdown has led to an influx of puppies being handed in.

Niall Lester, who is a co-founder of New Hope Animal Rescue in Kent, recently appeared on This Morning to chat with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about how shelters are being overwhelmed.

The animal lover told the hosts that old dogs and animals who have behavioural problems are increasingly likely to be euthanised in order to make space, as younger dogs are more likely to be adopted.

“I do think we’re at the very start of it,” said Lester. “I think we have a good year of this getting worse. I think this is the very beginning of the issue to be honest.”

He added: “Puppy sales have increased massively, puppy sales have spiked because people have been at home and felt they can manage a dog and as life returns to normal, since they’ve been back at work, problems are arising.

“Separation anxiety is a big one and it’s quite a difficult problem for people to manage, so we are seeing separation pups coming and stranger reaction, fear of other people, fear of other dogs, not the correct socialisation.

“I know it’s been difficult, but in retrospect, not the best time to bring up a pup or be breeding lots of pups, or buying lots of pups.”

YouTubers Slammed For Putting Family Dog Down After He Bit Their Child

After watching the segment, many viewers took to social media to reveal it had left them feeling heartbroken.

One person wrote: “If you’ve bought a dog over lockdown and are now giving it up as we return to ‘normal,’ shame on you and please don’t ever get a dog again. For the dog’s sake.”

Another added: “I’m sorry but who would want to put a healthy puppy down?!”

“Breaks my heart seeing all these beautiful dogs put in shelters and being put to sleep because idiots can’t commit to caring for them long term,” a third said.
