Jeremy Clarkson, who was recently slammed over a ‘dangerous’ photo of his Clarkson’s Farm co-star, is facing a backlash over a comment he made about Ant McPartlin’s drink-driving conviction.

When the 61-year-old made an appearance on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway show on February 19, he apparently made the atmosphere ‘awkward’ when he remarked: “Look it’s the driver and his friend.”

After watching the ITV programme, many took to Twitter and said that the comment was ‘below the belt’.

One penned: “@JeremyClarkson was that driver and his mate joke for Ant and Dec about his drink driving? Bit below the belt if so.”

Another added: “@JeremyClarkson just said ‘It’s the driver and his mate’ – Ant looks like he might kill him. #SaturdayNightTakeaway #Awkward. The entire nation doesn’t know where to look.”

“It was a great prank,” said a third. “But when on SNT and Clarkson said what he said about ‘It’s the driver and his mate,’ he was bang out of order!

“He’s a k*** and always will be. Ant, you’re amazing and I have supported you 100%.”

However, others took to the platform and said that the comment was referring to the show’s prank, as Ant was driving a bulldozer that dropped soil on Clarkson’s car.

Pitching in, one wrote: “To all you snowflakes ripping @JeremyClarkson for his ‘driver and his mate’ comment. Leave social media, you’re all embarrassing yourselves and reading into a comment that didn’t mean what you think it meant.”

A second remarked: “He meant the driver of the digger from the prank they had just played on him, did you actually watch the show?”

Imagine defending a convicted drink driver like Ant from someone like Jeremy Clarkson potentially having a dig back after a prank,” a third added. “The ‘fragita’ and snowflakes out in force on social media.”

In 2018, Ant McPartlin admitted to drink-driving and was reportedly disqualified for 20 months and fined £86,000.
