A one-month-old baby has been left orphaned after his police officer parents tragically ‘committed suicide’ within days of each other, according to reports.
An official statement shared by St Lucie Country Sheriff’s Office claims that the father, Clayton Osteen, attempted to take his own life on New Year’s Eve. Although he was unsuccessful, he died two days later in hospital on January 2.
It goes on to claim that his partner, and the mother of the newborn baby, Deputy Victoria Pacheco, then ‘took her own life in the wake of his death’.
So far, authorities have reportedly yet to determine what triggered the shocking incidents.
Speaking of the tragedy, Sheriff Ken Mascara said: “As sheriff, I saw these two deputies as young, ambitious, and a great compliment to my already amazing group of professionals.
“To the general public, and sometimes even myself, it’s easy to view law enforcement as superhuman… but let’s not forget that they’re human just like us.”
The sheriff then went on to say that the tragedy should prompt a ‘catalyst for change’ so something like this never happens again.
He continued: “While it is impossible for us to fully comprehend the private circumstances leading up to this devastating loss, we pray that this tragedy becomes a catalyst for change, a catalyst to help ease the stigma surrounding wellbeing and normalise the conversation about the challenges so many of us face on a regular basis.”
On Facebook, family and friends have paid tribute to the tragic couple.
Referring to Osteen, one person penned: “A true brother lost his internal battle.
“I struggle with finding the words to write that even remotely does him justice. I’m incredibly sorry that you felt this was your only option.”
