Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths is the new film from five-time Acadamy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
This is his first feature-length film since The Revenant (2015), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and will first get a limited release in cinemas before coming out on Netflix.
The synopsis reads: “Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths is an epic, visually stunning and immersive experience set against the intimate and moving journey of Silverio, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, who, after being named the recipient of a prestigious international award, is compelled to return to his native country, unaware that this simple trip will push him to an existential limit.
“The folly of his memories and fears have decided to pierce through the present, filling his everyday life with a sense of bewilderment and wonder.
“With both emotion and abundant laughter, Silverio grapples with universal yet intimate questions about identity, success, mortality, the history of Mexico and the deeply emotional familial bonds he shares with his wife and children. Indeed, what it means to be human in these very peculiar times.”

This will be Iñárritu’s first film shot in his homeland of Mexico since his 2000 thriller film Amores Perros.
It will also be his first Spanish-speaking movie since Biutiful, which came out in 2010.

Cinematographer Darius Khondji, who is best known for his work on Uncut Gems, will also be working on the film and he spoke about his experience on Bardo.
Speaking to The Film Stage, he said: “It was the hardest moment of Covid. It was January of last year; there was no vaccine and we were going to Mexico from France, where I live. We had a few conversations over the phone.
“I hadn’t read the script yet, but he was just very inspiring – you know, the conversation. At some point, he said, ‘Hang on, Darius, you haven’t read the script’.
“He doesn’t send the script so easily but he sent it to me and it was incredible. But the director is really what triggers my desire to work with them. Again, it’s another very personal film.
“I can’t talk much about it, you know?”
Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths stars Mexican actor Daniel Giménez Cacho in the lead role of Silverio.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2022, where it received largely positive reviews.
In his review for The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw called the film ‘certainly spectacular’.
While John Bleasdale wrote: “Ultimately, Iñárritu has created an accomplished film and a fitfully breathtaking experience. It is a gloriously rendered fantasy; a gold-plated opportunity to gaze at a filmmaker’s navel.”
Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths comes out in select cinemas on November 18 and will be available on Netflix from December 16.
