Ben Affleck has surprised fans by announcing he will be reprising the role of Batman, despite previously having said he has stepped down.

The 49-year-old confirmed he will be returning as ‘Caped Crusader’ in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom through Jason Momoa’s Instagram account.

Fans on social media were thrilled to hear the news, with one person on Twitter commenting: “THE BEST BATMAN IS BACK?!”

Another fan responded by writing: “ Ben Affleck is back as Batman. Holy s***!!!!! This is unbelievable.”

However, some fans have voiced their concern considering there will soon be three live-action Batmans, with Robert Pattinson and Michael Keaton both confirmed to portray the character in their own projects.

One commented: “DC really gonna have three goddamn Batmen running around.”

Another fan said: “Too many Batman versions in this current timeline.”

The Oscar winner announced his retirement from the role back in 2019, where he was open about the impact the character had on both his personal and professional life.

He was set to write, direct, and star in a solo Batman film but dropped out of the project altogether.

In an interview with the New York Times in 2020, Affleck said: “I showed somebody the Batman script. They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again’.”

Despite facing a lot of backlash from fans when initially cast in the role, he was universally praised for his violent, gritty portrayal of the iconic superhero in the film Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.

He would then later appear in Suicide Squad and Justice League.
