It looks like ‘Batfleck’ may no longer be a thing as Ben Affleck has decided to step down from his role as Batman.
The news today is that Ben Affleck will reportedly be stepping down from his role as the caped crusader in The Batman, which is scheduled for release in 2021. Affleck has been in the batsuit for DC’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017) and has even made a brief cameo in Suicide Squad (2016), yet it looks as though his time as Bruce Wayne has finally come to an end.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck will step down from playing the role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman as the film is reportedly wanting to focus on a younger Bruce Wayne.
Affleck himself tweeted earlier today: “Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life”.
Interestingly, he retweeted an article Deadline Hollywood claiming that Affleck was passing the torch to the next generation of Bruce Wayne, basically confirming that he will no longer be playing the Dark Knight.
It’s been a bit of a tumultuous process for the film in general because in 2017 it was announced that Affleck would direct and star in the film.
However, DC really does sound like they’ve decided to go in a completely different direction for The Batman, with Affleck no longer directing the film and Matt Reeves taking over the reins. The search is now on for a new and clearly younger Batman, so that begs the question: who will it be?
A lot of news came out of The DC camp yesterday, with release dates confirmed for The Batman, as well as DC Super-Pets and it was also confirmed that a brand new reboot of The Suicide Squad is set for release in 2021 as well, which is set to be written and directed by James Gunn after he left The Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 last year.
There are two things there which need pointing out: what a great move by DC for getting Gunn on board to reboot Suicide Squad and what the hell is DC Super Pets going to be about?
Well, DC Super Pets is going to focus on the pets of the superheroes. Fair enough. It’s still a couple of years away and obviously, a lot can change but 2021 is looking like it will be a huge year for DC.
