Cumberbatch, his wife Sophie and their three young children, were in the home when former luxury hotel chef Jack Bissell, 35, attempted to attack the property while wielding a knife.

He reportedly kicked through the front garden’s iron gate and pulled out one of the family’s plants and threw it at the garden wall.

Bissell also apparently spat at the intercom system before he ripped it off.

It has also been alleged that he was shouting threatening remarks towards The Grinch actor.

It was heard by Wood Green Crown Court on May 10 that the chef was saying: “I know you’ve moved here, I hope it burns down.”

He reportedly fled the scene but was arrested after police found his DNA on the intercom.

Bissell pleaded guilty to criminal damage and was fined £250 at his court hearing.

He was also given a three-year restraining order which prevents him from going anywhere near Cumberbatch’s family and the area they live in.

However, it is not clear why he targeted the 1917 actor’s house as he offered no defence for his actions.

A source close to the family told the Daily Mail that they were absolutely terrified when Bissell stepped foot on their property.

They said to the publisher: “Naturally all of the family were absolutely terrified and thought this guy was going to get in and hurt them.

“Luckily it never went that far. Benedict and Sophie have had many sleepless nights since worrying that they may be targeted again.

“The fact that it was a targeted intrusion makes it a lot more scary.”

The prosecution told the court that prior to his attack, Bissell bought two packs of pitta bread from a nearby shop and allegedly told the shopkeeper that he was going to break into their home and burn the house down.

It has been reported that the chef has a previous conviction for theft, three warnings for offences against property, a public order offence and a drug offence.

In 2015, he was photographed being arrested during protests against military intervention in Syria in central London.
