Boris Johnson has resigned as British Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson, who has held the position since 2019, appeared in a press conference outside Downing Street and made the announcement.

He stated: “It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new Prime Minister.

“And I’ve agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench MPs, that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable will be announced next week.

“And I’ve today appointed a Cabinet to serve, as I will, until a new leader is in place.”

Addressing the British public, he continued: “I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world, but them’s the breaks.”

Johnson’s resignation follows a tumultuous week in British politics.

Said Javid and Rishi Sunak both announced they had resigned in statements on Tuesday.

Boris Johnson ‘Won’t Take In Ukrainian Refugee’ Due To ‘Unique Circumstances’

Javid wrote: “The tone you set as a leader, and the values you represent, reflect on your colleagues, your party and ultimately the country. Conservatives at their best are seen as hard-headed decision makers, guided by strong values. We may not always have been popular, but we have been competent in acting in the national interest. Sadly, in the current circumstances, the public are concluding that we are neither.”

Sunak penned: “To leave ministerial office is a serious matter at any time. For me to step down as Chancellor while the world is suffering the economic consequences of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other serious challenges is a decision that I have not take lightly.”

On Wednesday night, it was revealed Michael Gove had been sacked from his position as State for Housing by the former Prime Minister.
