A man took to Reddit to ask others if he was being out of order for banning his girlfriend from wearing tampons as he had concerns for her health, as she is now furious with him.
A man has been slammed on Reddit after he explained that he had banned his girlfriend from wearing tampons and told her if she continued to wear them he would break up with her.
The anonymous man said that his girlfriend was “forgetful” and would regularly forget to change or remove her tampon. He said he was concerned this was a very unhygienic habit that could potentially lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare and life-threatening condition that is caused by tampons when they are left in the vagina too long.
He said: “I have no issue with women using tampons. I have an issue with HER using tampons. I have a few reasons for this.
“She doesn’t change them regularly enough in my opinion. I think it’s a forgetfulness thing?”
He added: “She doesn’t take risks seriously. This stresses me out because I’m worried she will get sick.
“However I have never made demands before recently.”
The man said that the issue had begun with his girlfriend having a “traumatic” ordeal the month before in which she was forced to seek medical help.
Yet his girlfriend doesn’t agree with him that she should stop using tampons.
He said: “She is furious with me. Says I’m being controlling. Says a man should not be demanding to women what sanitary products to use.”
However, he said that this would be a “dealbreaker” if she refused to follow his rules.
He finished by saying: “These are all things I agree with… usually. But I’m at a point where this is a hill I’m willing to die on and it may be a deal-breaker if she doesn’t agree to this.”
The man posted the confession to Reddit, where he asked users whether or not he was being out of order despite his reasoning.
To his surprise, the majority took his girlfriend’s side and told him he was being out of order.
One wrote: “You do not need to micromanage her period.
“Write that down and every time you get the urge to forbid her from tampons, read it and then sit back down.”
Another person commented: “It seems like you’re well-meaning, but this isn’t really your call to make. How would you feel if she asked you to stop using toilet paper because she thought you ‘used it wrong’?”
While a third said: “You can express your worries but you don’t get to forbid her or require her to do something different with her body and body functions.”
Meanwhile, others argued the boyfriend’s side and said that his girlfriend was acting in an “irresponsible” manner.
One Reddit user said: “I could not disagree with this more. As a loving partner in a relationship, he can totally ban his gf from doing something that is harmful.
“This is taking ‘her body, her choice’ way too far, and out of context.
“She is repeatedly doing something that could end up being fatal.
“You’re right that it should be an ultimatum, either she looks into using different products, or proves she can use tampons correctly or he leaves her.”
A second agreed, adding: “This irresponsible girl is going to get toxic shock & this guy won’t have a gf. He has a really valid reason to worry.
“I understand why he’s saying she shouldn’t wear them because honestly she really shouldn’t. She can’t handle it.”
