Brie Larson fans have said the star’s recent comments on her Captain Marvel role are ‘heartbreaking’.

The actress, who played the character in the 2019 superhero film, discussed the part when being interviewed by Variety on the red carpet at D23 Expo on Saturday.

When asked how long she plans to play the role, Larson responded: “I don’t know. Does anyone want me to do it again?”

The 32-year-old then shrugged and when the interviewer asked her not to be ‘modest’, she simply replied: “I don’t know. I really don’t have the answer to that.”

Following the exchange, people have taken to Twitter and speculated that Larson is referring to the sexist backlash she received after the role.

One tweeted: “This really does break my heart man. I love Captain Marvel and I love Brie Larson. I hope she knows how many people love her.”

“To be honest, I feel bad for her,” added another. “Maybe we’re too toxic.”

A third weighed in, penning: “I liked the movie and I’m a fan of her. I became even more of a fan after seeing some stuff she did with her YouTube channel. I hope she sticks around.”

“She’s an Oscar-winning actress who was extremely honest right there,” a fourth said. “Could have had a better PR answer but either way, people including myself were way too harsh. Would have helped to have played a well-written character but Brie herself ain’t too bad. Scott Pilgrim still slaps.”

The sexism against Larson began amid pre-release screenings for Captain Marvel.

According to reports, trolls took to the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes and slammed the star’s performance and the film as a whole, despite having not seen it.

Later on, the review site issued a policy change which means users can longer post comments on movies prior to their release.
