Burger King is facing a backlash after tweeting ‘women belong in the kitchen’ on International Women’s Day.

The fast-food chain has insisted it was an attempt ‘to bring attention to the huge lack of female representation in the restaurant industry’.

However, this wasn’t initially clear to Twitter users.

Its original post on Burger King’s official UK Twitter account read: “Women belong in the kitchen.”

It was followed up with an explanation, which read: “If they want to, of course. Yet only 20% of chefs are women.

“We’re on a mission to change the gender ratio in the restaurant industry by empowering female employees with the opportunity to pursue a culinary career.

“We are proud to be launching a new scholarship programme which will help female Burger King employees pursue their culinary dreams!”

However, the burger chain has been slammed for not making its message clear enough.

One tweeted: “This should have gone in the first tweet… bad PR.”

Another added: “This is the worst PR move of all time hahaha.”

“Imagine if they ran out of 5G before they could send that second tweet, lol,’ a third joked.

A fourth pitched in, writing: “How to take a great and positive idea and put it out into the world in really tone deaf way that creates a controversy that only takes away from their message and goal. A whopper of a marketing mistake.”

Replying to the hate, Burger King’s official Twitter said: “Yeah we think it’s a good idea, that’s why we’ve created a scholarship to help give more of our female employees the chance to pursue a culinary career.”
