ABBA Legend Has Died
An ABBA legend has tragically died.
After hearing the saddening news of the star’s passing, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute.
One person writes: “So sad to wake up to this news!! The music world has lost a legend…. But his work will be with us forever!”
“It’s never easy losing someone you’ve known and worked with for decades,” someone else says. “I can only imagine how the ABBA are feeling. At least he can say he left his mark on the world.”
“What sad news and what a great loss, condolences to ABBA. He brought so much joy through the music,” a third comments.
Michael B. Tretow has tragically passed away at age 80.
The sound engineer was the ‘magician’ behind ABBA’s music, working with the Swedish band for decades.
Fans often referred to Tretow as the ‘fifth member’ for his role in shaping the band’s revolutionary sound.
The sound engineer worked with ABBA on all their albums from 1973’s ‘Ring Ring’ to 1981’s ‘The Visitors,’ with the 2021 album ‘Voyage’ being the only one he didn’t.
He also co-owned the group’s label, Polar Music.
The Swedish band members have since shared their tributes.
Benny Andersson told Aftonbladet: “I hope and believe that you felt it throughout all the years that have passed since we worked (and continuously laughed) in the studio.
“Our music lives on, it seems, and you are the one who made it timeless. You were a fantastic inspirer and joy-maker, and the finest sound engineer the world has ever seen.”
Björn Ulvaeus said his significance for ABBA ‘cannot be overestimated,’ and described him as a ‘warm, generous person and a good friend’ who he thanked for ‘all the laughs.’
Anni-Frid Lyngstad shared with Aftonbladet: “You were the security in our little studio bubble with your never-ending creativity, warmth, and joy, and no one fit the bill as well as you!
“For us, you are forever part of the ABBA sound and you will never be forgotten!”
Agnetha Fältskog also paid tribute, saying: “So glad I got to spend some time with you a few weeks ago… You were so sick, but your laughter and humor were still there…
“So many memories are preserved, your encouraging words during the recordings meant so much. We are sad now, a talented and unique person has left us. Sleep well, Micke, you are in our hearts forever.”
Tretow’s wife and son confirmed his death to Aftonbladet, along with ABBA’s manager Görel Hanser.
No cause of death has been released, although the band’s tributes have made mention of an illness.
Tretow is survived by his wife and son.
