Adrien Brody Defends His ‘Disgusting’ Oscars Act After Facing Backlash
Adrien Brody has defended his ‘disgusting’ act after winning his second Best Actor Oscar.
Brody has spoken out following backlash over a controversial moment during the 2025 Academy Awards.
The 51-year-old actor, who won his second Best Actor Oscar for his performance in The Brutalist, was visibly emotional upon hearing his name announced as the winner.
He triumphed over fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, and Ralph Fiennes.
However, it was his actions on the way to the stage that sparked a heated reaction from viewers.

As Brody made his way up the steps to accept his award, he turned around, removed chewing gum from his mouth, and threw it toward his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman.
Chapman, 48, who was previously married to Harvey Weinstein, attempted to catch the gum as he proceeded to the stage.
The act, which many found distasteful, quickly became a talking point on social media.
Social media users were quick to express their disapproval.
One person wrote: “Adrien Brody could’ve used his long speech to apologize to his partner for throwing gum at her.”
Another tweeted: “Adrien Brody THROWING his gum at Georgina Chapman while on the stairs to accept his award is honestly more shocking to me than Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.”
Some even went so far as to call for consequences, with a third user stating: “Arrest Adrien Brody for hurling his gum at his wife at the Oscars.”

Beyond the gum-throwing incident, Brody also made headlines for delivering the longest acceptance speech in Academy Awards history.
His speech lasted five minutes and forty seconds, surpassing previous records. In his remarks, he reflected on the significance of the award, stating: “Winning an award like this signifies a destination and something my character references in the film.
“But to me, it also, beyond the pinnacle of a career, it is a chance to begin again and the opportunity to hopefully be fortunate enough so that the next 20 years of my life, I can prove that I am worthy of such meaningful, important and relevant roles.”
During his speech, he took a moment to acknowledge Chapman and her children, whom she shares with Weinstein.
“I know it’s been a rollercoaster. Thank you for accepting me into your life,” he said. He also revealed that the children affectionately call him ‘Popsie.’
The Oscars ceremony featured several other notable moments. Mikey Madison secured a surprise victory for Best Actress with her role in Anora, a film that also won Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker.
Zoe Saldaña made history by becoming the first Oscar winner of Dominican descent after winning Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez.
Despite the widespread criticism of his gum incident, Brody addressed the situation during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark shortly after his win.
He defended his actions, explaining: “I could’ve swallowed it, but I didn’t think about that. I had to get rid of it somehow.”
Chapman then admitted that she was unable to catch the gum.
