Alec Baldwin Slammed For ‘Insane’ Sam Neill Tribute
Alec Baldwin is facing criticism for his unusual tribute to Sam Neill, following the actor’s ‘sudden and unexpected’ death.
The Jurassic Park star died in Sydney on Monday, July 13, surrounded by his family, just months after revealing that he had successfully beaten cancer following groundbreaking treatment.
When news of his passing was first announced, his loved ones chose not to reveal the cause, leaving devastated fans around the world searching for answers.
Since then, people close to Neill, including a former partner and one of his longtime co-stars, have shared that the actor had been seriously ill in the weeks leading up to his death.
Sudden news of Sam Neill’s passing
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared across Neill’s social media accounts.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing,” the statement read.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
The statement continued: “The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Neill’s loved ones also thanked the medical staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for the care they provided during his final days and asked for privacy as they mourned.
The announcement carried particular emotional weight given the actor’s lengthy battle with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.
Although his family emphasized that the disease had not returned, they initially chose not to explain what had caused his death.
That lack of detail only deepened the shock, especially after many fans had recently celebrated Neill’s encouraging update that his cancer was gone.
In 2023, Neill publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
He first became concerned after discovering swollen glands while promoting Jurassic World Dominion in 2022, which ultimately led to his diagnosis and a course of chemotherapy.
The actor opened up about his health while promoting his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, explaining that writing the book during treatment gave him something meaningful to focus on.
Despite facing an uncertain future, Neill remained remarkably open about mortality.
Speaking to The Guardian, he admitted he was not afraid of dying but said it would be ‘annoying’ because he still wanted more time with his children, grandchildren, and beloved vineyard.
Unfortunately, his initial chemotherapy eventually lost its effectiveness, forcing him to explore alternative treatment options.
Earlier in 2026, Neill shared that he had joined an Australian clinical trial involving CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced treatment that modifies a patient’s own immune cells so they can recognize and attack cancer.
The therapy proved to be extraordinarily successful.
“I’ve had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body,” he said while sharing the update. “This is an extraordinary thing.”
When announcing his passing, his family reiterated that he remained cancer-free, making clear that the lymphoma itself was not believed to have caused his death.
However, they acknowledged that the extensive treatment Neill underwent had reportedly left a lasting impact on both his immune system and his overall health.
According to news.com.au, journalist Laura Tingle, who was previously in a relationship with Neill, said he had been ‘pretty sick’ for several weeks and that his body had become exhausted after years of intensive treatment.
“He’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he had,” she told ABC Radio Sydney.
“But that left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system.”
Tingle said his loved ones had been willing him to recover, but believed the latest illness had simply become too much for his body.
“He’s been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks, and everybody who loved him has been willing him on from near and far,” she said.
“But I think it was just a bit too much to recover from one more time.”

Tributes pour in for the much-loved actor
Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry, honoring a career that spanned more than five decades.
Steven Spielberg, who directed Neill as Dr. Alan Grant in the original Jurassic Park, remembered him as an irreplaceable member of the franchise’s extended family.
Laura Dern, who portrayed Dr. Ellie Sattler alongside him, described the actor as her “beloved lifetime friend,” celebrating his loyalty, generosity, humor, and compassion.
Jeff Goldblum, Nicole Kidman, Cillian Murphy, Russell Crowe, Richard E. Grant, and countless other stars also paid tribute, remembering Neill not only for his talent but for his warmth and kindness behind the scenes.
Kidman reflected on meeting Neill while filming the 1989 thriller Dead Calm, recalling that she was just 18 years old when they first worked together.
“He was charming, kind, funny, and intelligent,” she said, according to news.com.au.
“He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family.”
Political leaders also joined in honoring the actor’s extraordinary legacy.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as “one of the greats,” praising the actor for helping elevate New Zealand’s film industry onto the global stage.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed those sentiments, saying Neill had earned a cherished place in the hearts of Australians and would be “much mourned and long remembered.”

Alec Baldwin’s ‘insane’ tribute
Among the celebrity tributes came a message from Neill’s The Hunt for Red October co-star Alec Baldwin, who posted a nearly three-minute-long Instagram video.
Despite the lengthy post, Baldwin has been criticized for only mentioning his late co-star for the first 10 seconds and final five seconds of the clip.
Many accused him of focusing the clip on his memories of the film itself and not on honoring Neill.
“I just wanted to come on here quickly and say, how stricken I was to learn of the death of Sam Neill,” Baldwin said at the start of the video.
“When I did The Hunt for Red October, we shot in ’89, it came out in 1990, a long time ago.”
The 68-year-old went on to name drop several other stars of the film, while barely mentioning Neill.
Finally, he concluded: “That is one of the few movies I have ever done where I remember the whole movie. That’s what a fan I am of that work. Not me. I’m not a fan of my work but I am a fan of their work.
“Anyway, oh my God. My God. Sam Neill. My love to his family, My love to his family.”
Baldwin’s followers were quick to point out the bizarre nature of the tribute, with some even going as far as branding it ‘insane’ and ‘selfish’.
“It is classic Baldwin to make everything about himself, even when the goal is supposed to be honoring a legendary co-star,” one person wrote.
Another added: “He forgot what he was supposed to be talking about? He had zero to say about Sam.”
“Alec Baldwin’s tribute to Sam Neill is insane,” a third wrote.
But not everyone agreed, with one Reddit user defending the actor.
“I think Sam Neill dying just kind of sent him down memory lane on a project he really enjoyed doing. Would it have been cooler and nicer if he had actually talked about Sam Neill? Of course,” they wrote.
“But they didn’t have many scenes together, so it was mostly just an old guy understandably getting nostalgic for the movie that really spring boarded his career as a lead actor triggered by the death of a colleague.”
