Anthony Joshua’s Haunting Post Before Deadly Car Crash As More Devastating Details Emerge
Anthony Joshua’s final post before the fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two has been revealed, as further heartbreaking details about the tragedy emerge.
The former world champion, 36, was involved in a tragic car accident earlier this week (December 29), which killed two members of his team.
Joshua was in the back of a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck, causing an accident on the highway.
He had traveled to Nigeria with his two friends to visit family and ring in the new year.
‘We are all one under God’s eyes’
Joshua was rushed to hospital following the collision.
It comes after the star fought YouTube boxer Jake Paul on December 19, and won by knockout in the sixth round.
In a post following the fight, Joshua said: “A massive shoutout to the 33 million of you who tuned in to support me, Jake, and everyone on the undercard, and thank you to those who prayed for me during fight week.
“Enjoy the festive break if you’re celebrating, and have a blessed week if you’re not.
“Big things coming in the New Year, so stay tuned. We are all one under God’s eyes.”
Following the deadly collision, Paul released a statement.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he said: “Life is much more important than boxing.
“I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
Anthony Joshua’s family issued an update
A relative of Joshua’s in Nigeria, who has not been named, shared that the whole family was ‘in shock.’
They are hoping for his ‘speedy recovery,’ and offered prayers for those close to him who died in the crash.
The black SUV was almost unrecognizable after smashing into a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway – known as one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads.
Officials reported that five people were involved in the collision.
The boxer’s family is well known in the town, and traces its ancestry there across several generations.
Who died in the accident?
The two men killed in the accident were Joshua’s close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, who had both helped him prepare for his fight against Paul just weeks earlier.
Boxing promoter Matchroom also released a statement, which read: “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”
It’s been reported that Joshua ‘narrowly escaped death,’ and there are fears he may have suffered rib and knee injuries.
A spokesperson for the boxer stated on Monday evening: “Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment, he is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.”
Boxer Tyson Fury has also sent his condolences to the families affected, as he wrote: “This is so sad.
“May God give them a good bed in heaven.”
What caused the crash?
Officials have since reported the shocking cause of the crash, after many users online speculated.
Police investigators have put the cause of the car crash down to a tyre blowout after attempting to overtake another vehicle.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, Police Commander of Nigeria’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, said that the vehicle ‘lost control’ after the car had ‘experienced a tyre burst because of excessive speed.’
Investigators believe that the crash occurred when the driver attempted ‘an overtaking manoeuvre.’
In a heartbreaking account of the accident, one eyewitness revealed that ‘the passenger beside the driver and Joshua died on the spot.’
Joshua’s haunting final post before the crash
Before the crash, Joshua posted a haunting video that fans have reshared.
Just hours before the collision, at 9.30 a.m. local time, the boxer posted a clip of him playing table tennis alongside his long-time friend, Kevin Ayodele.
Tagging his late coach Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, he captioned the video: “@healthy_mindset dishing out table tennis smoke.”
His late strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, had also shared an Instagram post of what is believed to be the back of a vehicle which was part of the boxer’s convoy.
