Authorities have issued a tragic update on the death of Kaylee Hottle as more tragic details have emerged.
The investigation into the tragic death of Godzilla vs. Kong actress Kaylee Hottle has taken another step forward after authorities released new information about the crash that claimed the 18-year-old’s life.
Hottle, who was best known for playing Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, died after the vehicle she was traveling in crashed in Maryland during the early hours of July 21.
Officials have now shared further details about the collision as tributes continue to pour in for the young actress, who was widely praised for helping improve deaf representation in Hollywood.
Authorities reveal what happened
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. in Ijamsville, Maryland.
Investigators say a 1995 Honda Accord, driven by a 19-year-old man from Frederick, left the right side of the two-lane roadway before striking a culvert.
A preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision.
Three people were inside the vehicle at the time.
The driver was taken to hospital with injuries that authorities said were not believed to be life-threatening, while another passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.
Hottle, who was sitting in the car as a passenger, was transported to a trauma center but later died from her injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests or citations have been announced.
Dispatch audio later obtained by media outlets revealed first responders requested assistance from someone who knew American Sign Language or had access to an interpreter application in an effort to communicate with Hottle at the scene.
The audio also indicated she was unconscious when emergency crews arrived.
Her father, Joshua Hottle, later revealed authorities informed him that his daughter’s heart stopped while she was being transported to hospital.
Heartbreaking tributes from family and co-stars
The devastating news was first shared publicly by Hottle’s father, Joshua, in an emotional Facebook video recorded in American Sign Language.
“I am taking a flight that I never would like to take,” he wrote alongside the video as he traveled to Maryland.
During the livestream, Joshua explained that his wife and the couple’s four other children were grieving together at home while he traveled to bring Kaylee back to Texas.
Despite the unimaginable loss, he also shared a message directed toward the young driver.
“I have forgiven you,” Joshua said.
“Don’t let this incident ruin the rest of your life.”
Kaylee’s mother, Ketsi Hottle, also shared her heartbreak, saying she still felt her daughter remained with the family in spirit.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was preparing to begin her senior year, described her passing as a “tremendous loss.”
“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time,” the school said.
“Please keep Kaylee’s loved ones in your thoughts as we mourn this tremendous loss together.”
Hollywood colleagues also paid tribute.
Rebecca Hall, who played Dr. Ilene Andrews, Jia’s adoptive mother in the MonsterVerse films, shared photographs of herself with Hottle on Instagram.
“Devastated to hear this news. My heart goes out to your family,” she wrote.
“You will be missed Kaylee.”
Millie Bobby Brown also expressed her sadness, writing: “I’m so devastated to hear this. You will be deeply missed Kaylee.”
Oscar-winning actors Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur, along with fellow deaf actress Alaqua Cox, also honored Hottle’s memory online.
A career that inspired the deaf community
Born into a deaf family that spans four generations on her father’s side, Hottle grew up using American Sign Language as her first language.
She began acting as a child, appearing in commercials before landing her breakthrough role as Jia in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
The character became one of the franchise’s emotional centerpieces.
Jia, the last known survivor of the Iwi people of Skull Island, forms an extraordinary bond with Kong, communicating with him through American Sign Language.
Many viewers praised the casting, noting that Hottle’s own experience as a deaf actor brought authenticity to the role.
She returned to play Jia in the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and was also set to appear in the upcoming film What Doesn’t Kill Us.
During a 2024 interview, Hottle spoke proudly about representing the deaf community.
“I think some people see ASL and deafness as a barrier or a gift, but it’s just a language, and deaf is just deaf.
“We can do many things, just not hear.
“We need more deaf actresses and crew in the industry for people to see and normalize it.”
Her dedication also inspired those around her.
Co-stars Rebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård both learned American Sign Language so they could communicate directly with her during filming.
Skarsgård later praised her professionalism, recalling how quickly she absorbed direction and adapted her performances on set.
Tragic details emerge
Authorities have confirmed that Kaylee Hottle died following injuries sustained in the single-vehicle crash in Ijamsville, Maryland.
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe excessive speed was a contributing factor after the vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert, per Page Six.
The crash remains under investigation, and officials have not announced any criminal charges or traffic citations.
Hottle was just 18 years old.
Although her acting career had only recently begun, she left a lasting impact through her performances and her advocacy for deaf representation on screen.
For many fans, she will always be remembered as Jia, the courageous young girl who formed an unforgettable friendship with Kong while showing millions of viewers that disability was never a barrier to telling powerful stories.
