Bella Ramsey has made a heartbreaking confession and fans are devastated.

Ramsey originally rose to fame through their portrayal of the fierce Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s Game of Thrones, appearing in nine episodes between 2016 and 2019.

Despite limited screen time, their commanding presence and memorable declaration that ‘I don’t plan on knitting by the fire while men fight for me’ made the character an instant fan favorite.

Since then, the British actor has continued to impress audiences worldwide, especially with their leading role as Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us, a television adaptation of the acclaimed video game.

Their performance has been widely praised by critics, with the series establishing itself as a standout example of a video game successfully brought to life on screen.

Ramsey has received Emmy and BAFTA nominations for best actress for their work on the show.

However, amid their growing fame, Ramsey has made a sad confession to their fans.

Bella Ramsey’s personal journey

Beyond their professional achievements, Ramsey has been navigating a complex personal journey that has unfolded under the intense scrutiny of public attention.

In 2023, during promotion for The Last of Us, they publicly came out as non-binary and genderfluid, telling The New York Times that they use they/them pronouns and explaining: “Being gendered isn’t something I particularly like.”

The announcement generated significant conversation among fans of the show and the gaming community, with reactions ranging from supportive to hostile.

Some internet trolls expressed fury about the inclusion of LGBT+ characters in entertainment, creating an additional layer of pressure on the young actor.

Identity and pronouns

In various interviews since coming out, Ramsey has offered insights into their evolving understanding of gender identity.

Speaking to Wired, they revealed a remarkably relaxed approach to pronouns: “[My pronouns] are whatever you fancy, really. A lot of people call me they, some people call me she, and occasionally I get a he. I’m sort of whatever. I’m pretty chill about it all for now. Maybe that’ll change, but for now…”

However, in their British Vogue interview, Ramsey specified that ‘being called ‘they’ is the most truthful thing for me,’ showing that while they’re comfortable with flexibility, there is still a preference that feels most authentic to their identity.

On Louis Theroux’s podcast, Ramsey shared their visceral reaction to certain gendered language: “If people call me an actress, I have a guttural ‘ugh, that’s not quite right’ instinct to it. But I just don’t take it too seriously. It doesn’t feel like an attack on my identity. It’s just a funny thing that doesn’t really fit.”

Ramsey also described how their gender identity has been clear since childhood: “It was just something that had been very obvious since I was young. I’d always call myself a tomboy, but it wasn’t that I was like a boyish girl.

“I was always a bit of an inbetween, leaning more to the boy’s side to be honest. I feel like I grew up more as a little boy than I did a little girl.”

The pressure of fame

Speaking to Vogue, Ramsey acknowledged how fame has complicated their personal journey of self-discovery in ways they hadn’t anticipated.

“As much as I would try and keep it private, if someone recognizes me on the street… and takes a photo, then that is just talked about,” they commented, highlighting the impossibility of maintaining privacy as a public figure.

They also addressed the unique pressure actors face to have definitive answers about their personal lives: “Part of the job of being an actor is that you’re supposed to have an answer to every question that people ask you. But actually the answer can be, ‘I don’t know and I’m not ready to talk about that.'”

This pressure became particularly acute when The Last of Us began production. “I didn’t think about the use of pronouns until The Last of Us started in 2023, and it was a question that I had and suddenly I had to choose,” Ramsey explained. “I was so stressed out about it because I didn’t know, and I didn’t really care.”

Ramsey also revealed they rejected the term non-binary ‘for so long’ because they didn’t want to be seen as being ‘trendy,’ showing the internal struggle that preceded their public announcement.

The broader conversation about awards

Ramsey’s experience has also placed them at the center of ongoing debates about how the entertainment industry should handle gender in award categories.

In their interview with Louis Theroux, they voiced support for maintaining separate categories for male and female performers, recognizing the importance of preserving recognition for women in the industry.

“I think it’s so important that that’s preserved – that the recognition for women in this industry is preserved,” Ramsey explained, referencing how gender-neutral categories at the Brit Awards resulted in no women being nominated in 2023.

“But then, where do non-binary or gender non-conforming people fit into that? I don’t know. I’ve literally sat and tried to think my way to the answer, and haven’t got there,” they admitted, per the BBC.

Bella Ramsey’s heartbreaking confession

In an interview with the Guardian, Ramsey has made a sad and surprisingly painful confession about their decision to come out publicly that has devastated fans who support the young actor.

Reflecting on the aftermath of their announcement, Ramsey admitted: “Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t.”

The heartbreaking statement reveals unexpected regret about what should have been a liberating moment of self-expression.

“I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing. Obviously it was going to [but] I didn’t really understand that at the time,” Ramsey explained, showing they simply weren’t prepared for the intensity of the public response and media attention that followed.

The confession has left fans heartbroken, with many expressing support for the actor and frustration that society’s reaction made them regret living authentically.

Despite these painful reflections, Ramsey acknowledged that sharing their identity has had a genuinely positive impact on others navigating similar journeys. “People have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation,” they noted.

This recognition has helped balance the negative aspects of their experience. “So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret,” Ramsey added.

The actor emphasized that while the attention was overwhelming, the personal freedom gained from living authentically has ultimately been worthwhile. “But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically,” they concluded.
