Taylor Swift has received an apology from Billboard following the use of a controversial nude image in a video celebrating her career.

The incident, which outraged fans and sparked a social media backlash, revolved around a clip taken from Kanye West’s infamous 2016 music video for ‘Famous.’

The video in question was part of a series highlighting the greatest pop stars of the 21st century, where Swift was named the second greatest.

As the narrator recounted her long-standing feud with West, Billboard included the contentious footage, which depicted a nude representation of Swift.

The decision to include this imagery ignited widespread criticism, with fans accusing the publication of disrespecting the singer’s legacy.

The video initially aimed to celebrate Swift’s storied career, but fans quickly turned their attention to the clip, calling it distasteful and inappropriate.

Many highlighted the offensive nature of including such imagery in a tribute to her accomplishments.

The hashtag #BillboardIsOverParty trended on social media platforms as Swifties demanded accountability.

Criticism also extended to Billboard’s ranking itself.

Naming Swift the second greatest pop star of the 21st century instead of the top spot fueled further outrage, with fans arguing that her cultural and commercial impact warranted first place.

Under the Instagram announcement of the rankings, fans decried the decision as a ‘joke,’ with one commenting: “She deserved #1. Don’t even lie – she is the biggest artist of all time, not just of the century.”

This controversy follows Swift’s own prior condemnation of the ‘Famous’ music video, which she described as ‘revenge porn’ in a 2019 Tumblr post.

The feud between Swift and West has a long and tumultuous history.

It originated at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when West infamously interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech, claiming Beyoncé deserved the award instead.

Although the two appeared to reconcile in subsequent years, the release of ‘Famous’ reignited tensions.

West claimed that Swift had approved the lyrics and concept, while Swift vehemently denied any such agreement.

The situation escalated when West’s then-wife Kim Kardashian released a phone call that she claimed exonerated her husband, further damaging Swift’s reputation at the time.

In the years since, Swift has reflected on the public fallout from these incidents.

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she described the experience of being ‘canceled’ as isolating, saying: “A mass public shaming, with millions of people saying you are quote-unquote canceled, is a very isolating experience.”

While Billboard’s intent was to provide a comprehensive look at Swift’s career, the inclusion of the clip not only highlighted the ongoing impact of the feud but also reignited questions about the original video’s implications.

Some legal experts have suggested that Swift could have pursued legal action against West over the ‘Famous’ imagery, citing copyright infringement, defamation, or California’s Right to Publicity law.

However, what may have been lost in the uproar is the fact that the nude depiction of Swift was not actually of the singer herself but rather a wax figure.

Created as part of the artistic set for West’s ‘Famous,’ the waxwork sparked significant debate upon its release and continues to be a point of contention years later.

The video depicted nude wax representations of several celebrities, including Rihanna, Donald Trump, Chris Brown, Kim Kardashian, and Swift herself, lying together in a bed.

At the time of the video’s release, Swift expressed her outrage, with sources close to her saying she felt violated by the imagery.

In a public apology shared on their social media accounts, Billboard acknowledged the mistake.

“We are deeply sorry to Taylor Swift and all of our readers and viewers that in a video celebrating Swift’s achievements, we included a clip that falsely depicted her,” the statement read.

“We have removed the clip from our video and sincerely regret the harm we caused with this error.”
