Singer Bonnie Tyler has tragically died at the age of 75.

Millions of music fans around the world are mourning after heartbreaking news emerged about one of the most distinctive voices in rock history.

The legendary Welsh singer, whose unmistakable raspy vocals helped define an entire generation of music, has died aged 75.

The devastating announcement comes just weeks after supporters were told she remained critically ill following a major medical emergency that forced her to cancel planned performances.

As tributes pour in from fellow musicians and fans alike, many are looking back at the extraordinary career that transformed a young woman from a Welsh council house into one of the biggest music stars on the planet.

From Welsh clubs to global superstardom

Long before she became an international household name, Bonnie Tyler was simply Gaynor Hopkins, the Guardian reports.

Born in Skewen, near Neath in South Wales, on June 8, 1951, she grew up in a working-class family and developed a love of music from an early age.

She later recalled carrying records in shopping bags to her aunt’s house so she could spend hours listening to music with her cousins.

Her career began modestly, performing cover songs in local rugby clubs and working men’s clubs while also working in a grocery shop.

Everything changed in the mid-1970s when talent scout Roger Bell spotted her performing at Swansea’s Townsman Club.

That chance encounter eventually led to her signing with RCA Records.

She adopted the stage name Bonnie Tyler and, after her first single failed to make much impact, quickly found success with Lost In France in 1977.

The breakthrough launched a career that would span five decades.

Her unmistakable voice almost never happened

One of Bonnie Tyler’s defining features was her instantly recognisable husky voice.

Ironically, it came about following surgery.

Early in her career she underwent an operation to remove nodules from her vocal cords.

During her recovery she reportedly ignored doctors’ advice to remain silent, permanently changing the sound of her voice.

Rather than ending her career, the gravelly tone became her trademark.

She later described the unexpected result as giving her voice ‘more of an edge.’

It would become one of the most distinctive voices in popular music.

The song that changed everything

Although she’d already enjoyed success with songs like It’s A Heartache, it was one record that transformed Bonnie Tyler into a global superstar.

Released in 1983, Total Eclipse Of The Heart became an international phenomenon.

Written and produced by legendary songwriter Jim Steinman, the dramatic power ballad topped the charts in both the UK and the United States.

It also reached number one across Australia, Canada, Ireland and several other countries.

Bonnie later admitted she initially doubted the song would ever become a hit because of its length.

“When I recorded the song, I thought no-one is going to end up playing this because it’s so long,” she previously recalled.

The original version ran for almost eight minutes before being shortened for radio.

More than four decades later, it remains one of the most recognisable songs ever recorded.

The music video has amassed well over one billion YouTube views, while the track recently surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.

The song even enjoyed a remarkable resurgence during the total solar eclipse of 2017, returning to the top of the US iTunes chart as millions celebrated the rare astronomical event.

A career full of iconic hits

Following the enormous success of Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Bonnie Tyler cemented herself as one of the defining voices of the 1980s.

She followed it with Holding Out For A Hero, another Jim Steinman collaboration that became a classic after appearing on the soundtrack for Footloose.

Other hits included It’s A Heartache, Have You Ever Seen The Rain?, Bitterblue, If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man), Here She Comes and Believe In Me.

Across her career she released 18 studio albums, earned three Grammy nominations and three Brit Award nominations.

In 2013 she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with Believe In Me.

Although she finished 19th, she later said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Her contributions to music were formally recognised when she was appointed an MBE for services to music.

Despite decades in the spotlight, Bonnie often described herself simply as ‘a working-class girl’ who never expected any of it to happen.

Fans remained hopeful after her health battle

Earlier this year, concern spread among fans after Bonnie was rushed to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, Sky News reports.

In May, her team confirmed she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery.

Days later, it was revealed that doctors had placed her into an induced coma to aid her recovery.

Although supporters were understandably alarmed, updates in the weeks that followed appeared cautiously optimistic.

Her representatives later confirmed she had come out of the coma but remained ‘very unwell’ and was receiving intensive care treatment.

Summer tour dates were cancelled or postponed as doctors focused on her recovery.

Many fans hoped the beloved singer would eventually return to the stage to celebrate 50 years since her breakthrough success.

Sadly, that comeback never came.

Tributes begin pouring in

Following news of her death, tributes have begun arriving from fans around the world, many describing Bonnie Tyler as one of the greatest voices in rock history.

For countless listeners, songs like Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero became defining soundtracks to their lives.

Others have remembered her humility, warmth and unmistakable stage presence throughout a career spanning half a century.

More tributes are expected as fellow musicians and public figures react to the heartbreaking news.

Bonnie Tyler’s family confirmed in a statement that the singer died unexpectedly in hospital in Portugal.

According to the statement, she passed away ‘as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,’ the BBC reports.

The announcement comes after months of serious health complications that began with emergency intestinal surgery in May, followed by an induced coma and a lengthy stay in intensive care.

Her family said they were ‘heartbroken’ by the loss and asked for privacy as they mourn the legendary singer.
