Jocelyn Wildenstein’s fiancé has confirmed her cause of death.

The 84-year-old socialite gained widespread attention for her feline-like facial features and reportedly extensive cosmetic surgery, which she always denied having.

Her iconic look led to fans worldwide and an Instagram following of over 1.1 million followers.

Fans took to social media following reports of Wildenstein’s death on New Year’s Eve and paid tribute.

The socialite married French billionaire businessman and art dealer Alec Wildenstein in 1978.

It was reported that she began undergoing cosmetic procedures following their union.

Alec told Vanity Fair in 1998: “She was crazy. I would always find out last. She was thinking that she could fix her face like a piece of furniture. Skin does not work that way. But she wouldn’t listen.”

Following a 21-year marriage, the two had an extremely messy divorce after Wildenstein discovered her husband with a model in their New York home.

The split captured the public’s attention with a reported divorce settlement of over $2.5 billion.

In the years following, Wildenstein continued to make headlines for her lavish lifestyle and bold looks.

She previously denied having plastic surgery in an interview with The Sun, saying she’d only had Botox ‘twice.’

The socialite claimed: “I haven’t had plastic surgery, I am scared of what can happen and I don’t like to have something heavy, sometimes it is a bit heavy and terrible.”

Instead, Wildenstein downplayed her feline-like appearance and credited genetics and different hairstyles.

Wildenstein met her partner Lloyd Klein in 2003 during Paris Fashion Week.

Her long-time partner confirmed she passed away just hours before New Year’s Eve celebrations began.

A statement to AFP read: “Her partner Lloyd Klein is saddened to announce the death of Jocelyn Wildenstein in Paris.”

The socialite reportedly died in the late afternoon of December 31 while in a Paris suite where the couple had taken temporary residence.

In an interview with People magazine, Klein shared details of the final hours with his partner.

He said: “We had a nice happy hour the same night and we were getting ready for the new year, and we took a little nap just to look good before getting dressed.”

The fashion couturier woke up from his rest to find Wildenstein had ‘died in her sleep very peacefully.’

Klein said his partner’s health had appeared ‘impeccable,’ recalling their dinner at the Ritz two days prior.

He said: “Before that, we had come for Fashion Week at Chanel. Everything was good, everything was good.”

The fashion couturier also went on to disclose the suspected cause of Wildenstein’s death.

He said the 84-year-old suffered from phlebitis, a condition Healthline describes as inflammation of a vein that may be caused by damage to the vein wall or by a blood clot that blocks a vein.

Klein said of her condition: “Because of her phlebitis, the legs were very, very swollen, and the blood was blocked, and there was no oxygen in the brain.

“And we were having a nap and when I wake up, I said, ‘Jocelyn, we have to wake up, we have to get dressed,’ and she was cold and she was dead.”

AFP reported that Wildenstein died from a pulmonary embolism, which is when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lung.

This deadly condition is often caused by blood clots in the legs that travel to the lungs, per the Mayo Clinic.
