Charlbi Dean has tragically died aged 32.

Dean, born Charlbi Dean Kriek, was a South African actress and model who is known for her role in the Spud films and the superhero drama series Black Lightning.

This year she starred alongside Harris Dickinson and Woody Harrelson in the Ruben Östlund-directed Triangle of Sadness, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it won the prestigious Palme d’Or.

Dean’s heartbreaking death has been confirmed by Deadline.

It’s reported that she died in New York on Monday following an ‘unexpected sudden illness’.

So far, no further information have been released.

Many people have taken to social media and paid tribute to the young star.

One person writes: “Heartbroken. RIP Charlbi Dean.”

Another adds: “RIP Charlbi Dean, so young.”

While somebody else pens: “Sad to learn that Charlbi Dean, best known as Syonide on Black Lightning, has passed away from an unknown illness. She was 32.

“She was one of my favourite villains on the show and the one I missed the most when she departed from the series. RIP.”

Dean was born on February 5, 1990, in Cape Town.

She began modelling at just six years old and got started in acting in 2010 in the South African boarding-school comedy Spud.

She reprised her role for the 2013 sequel.

Dean has also starred in movies such as Blood in the Water and Don’t Sleep.

In her modelling career, she’s covered the South African editions of GQ and Elle.

While she signed with UTA in January, Dean has also been repped by Silver Lining Entertainment.

Dean reportedly survived a near-fatal experience in 2009 when she and her then-boyfriend were involved in a horrifying car crash in Cape Town, South Africa.

The crash left the star in intensive care with several broken bones and a collapsed lung, according to reports.
