Cher Fans Stunned As Singer Reveals Her Real Name After Birth Certificate Mix-Up
Cher’s fans have been left stunned after learning the singer’s real name.
The iconic singer, dubbed the ‘Goddess of Pop,’ is one of the best-selling music artists of all time and is recognized for hits such as ‘Believe’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time.’
She rose to fame in 1965 as part of the pop rock duo Sonny & Cher with her then-husband, Sonny Bono.
Since then, Cher has had a thriving career and is the only solo artist to achieve at least one new No. 1 on a Billboard Songs chart in each of the seven decades.
And while fans think they know everything about Cher, it turns out this isn’t the case.
In her 2024 memoir ‘Cher: The Memoir, Part One,’ the singer made a surprising revelation about her name.
After learning the star’s real name, one fan wrote: “This is crazy, what?”
Another asked: “How did she not know?”
“I’ve never wanted to know Cher’s real name, I’m kind of sad now,” a third commented.
The ‘I Got You Babe’ singer legally changed her name to Cher in 1979 by shortening her first name and dropping the four surnames she had at the time.
She had her birth name Sarkisian, her stepfather’s surname LaPierre, and Bono and Allman from her marriages to Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman.
In an interview with CNBC, she spoke of her name change: “To my family, I had always been Cher, then I had two children by two different fathers, so I took both last name.
“Then I thought I don’t like either one of these, so I went to court and just said ‘I want to change my name to Cher,’ and the judge said ‘Well could you be recognized by the majority of people by just Cher?'”
The music legend also confirmed her passport only has Cher written on it.
Cher revealed she had believed her real name was Cherylin until she legally changed it.
Her mother, Georgia Holt, gave birth to her as a teenager, and when the nurse asked her what name she’d chosen for her daughter, she hadn’t decided.
Cher wrote (per People): “My mother had no idea, but the woman insisted so she replied, ‘Well, Lana Turner’s my favorite actress, and her little girl’s called Cheryl. My mother’s name is Lynda, so how about Cherilyn?’”
So it came as a surprise to both the singer and her mom when looking at Cher’s birth certificate.
Cher revealed: “I was shocked to discover that I was officially registered as Cheryl, and asked my mother, ‘Do you even know my real name, Mom?’”
To which Holt said: “Let me look at that,” before adding: “I was only a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain. Give me a break.”
