Disney star Coco Lee has sadly died aged 48.

The Hong-Kong born singer – whose real name is Ferren Lee – moved to the US as a child and released several albums both in English and Mandarin.

Her voicework is recognisable from the Mandarin version of the Disney classic Mulan, in which she voiced the titular character as well as singing the film’s theme song ‘Reflection’.

Devastatingly, it has been confirmed by Lee’s sisters that she passed away after being placed in a coma.

In a statement on Facebook and Instagram, Lee’s older sisters, Carol and Nancy, explained that Lee had been ‘suffering from depression’ for a few years, but sadly her condition had ‘deteriorated drastically’ over the last few months.

“Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” they penned.

Lee’s siblings went on to confirm that the actress had attempted suicide over the weekend.

They continued: “On July 2, she committed suicide at home and was sent to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on July 5, 2023.”

The sisters then paid tribute to their sister and her illustrious career, adding that 2023 is the 30th anniversary of Lee’s career.

The statement added: “As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honoured to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel.

“We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression.

“Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for this poor old lady and allow us time and privacy in healing.”

The sisters ended their post by thanking the medical staff for their ‘dedication’ to looking after Lee throughout this time, while hoping that everyone will ‘share her bright smile’.
