Elliot Page has spoken out about the moment an A-list celebrity ‘verbally assaulted’ him after he came out in 2014.

The actor shot to fame when he starred in Juno when he was just 20 years old, though his career began several years earlier in his teens. He appeared in a number of big titles, including Inception and X-Men: Days of the Future, before one of his biggest roles starring in The Umbrella Academy.

Coming out as a trans man in 2020

In recent years, however, the 39-year-old, who hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada, has become more well known for his activism for LGBTQ+ rights, having come out as transgender in December 2020.

Page took to social media to announce his identity as a trans man, informing the world his pronouns would be he and they, and introducing his new name as Elliot.

He revealed he had been encouraged to share his true identity to the wider public, partly because of the coronavirus pandemic which was ongoing at the time, and partially as a result of the vicious anti-transgender rhetoric that was growing in politics and the news cycle at the time.

Page told fans he could ‘begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.’

“I love that I am trans and I love that I am queer,” he added, before going on to confess his fears over the repercussions he could face from coming out in a world where transphobia is such a real issue.

“The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence,” Page wrote in the post on X.

“To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering.”

However, he vowed to ‘do everything I can to change this world for the better.’

Since then, the actor has stayed true to his word, passionately advocating for trans and non-binary people, even becoming the first trans man to appear on the cover of Time in 2021.

Verbally abused by A-list celebrity

Several years before coming out as a trans man, Page shared the news that he was gay, and while the reception to his revelation was mostly warm, he has shared a dark story involving a Hollywood star.

Writing in his memoir Pageboy, which was released in 2023, the Umbrella Academy star recounted the unfortunate incident, which took place at a birthday party in Los Angeles. He aptly titled that chapter of the book ‘Famous A**hole at Party.’

Back in 2014, Page said an A-lister who he referred to simply as an ‘acquaintance,’ said to him: “You aren’t gay, that doesn’t exist. You are just afraid of men.”

The celebrity continued: “I’m going to f*** you to make you realise you aren’t gay.”

Days after the extremely disturbing encounter, Page bumped into the unnamed actor again at the gym, where the A-lister insisted: “I don’t have a problem with gay people, I swear,” to which Page told him: “I think you might.”

While most people will find the harrowing memory an upsetting read, the 39-year-old says he’s experienced ‘some version’ of that kind of interaction taking place ‘many times’ throughout his life.

“A lot of queer and trans people deal with it incessantly,” he wrote. “These moments that we often like don’t talk about or we’re supposed to just brush off, when actually it’s very awful.”

Page revealed he chose to share that specific memory to ‘highlight the reality, the s*** we deal with and what gets sent to us constantly, particularly in environments that are predominantly cis and heterosexual.’

He said: “How we navigate that world where you either have more extreme, overt moments like that. Or you have the more, like, subtle jokes.

“[In Hollywood] these are very powerful people. They’re the ones choosing what stories are being told and creating content for people to see all around the world.”

Though he said he was purposely not saying the famous actor’s name, Page said: “He will hear about this and know it’s him.”
