Emily Blunt has explained why she called Cillian Murphy the ‘worst celebrity in the world.’
The A-list actors starred alongside each other in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster hit Oppenheimer.
Murphy’s performance earned him widespread recognition and the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the development of the first atomic bomb.
Blunt, who played Oppenheimer’s wife, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, the Fall Guy star offered a controversial comment on her co-star when discussing his attitude towards fame and his approach to acting.
During the interview, Blunt was asked about Murphy’s tendency to shy away from compliments and whether he understood the extent of his talents.
She responded: “No, I don’t think so. I don’t know if any of the great actors know or would say that about themselves.”
Blunt went on to explain that Murphy is constantly seeking new challenges and exploring what more he can accomplish in his career, saying: “I feel he’s always in search, he’s looking off the horizon, looking at what else [he] could do, how far [he] could push it.”
She also remarked that Murphy would likely find it difficult to acknowledge his excellence, suggesting: “I think it would be so painful for him to acknowledge how good he is, I don’t see that happening.”
This is when Blunt dubbed Murphy the ‘worst celebrity in the world.’
However, far from being a jab, Blunt’s comment was intended as a compliment to Murphy.
Instead, her words were a testament to his devotion to acting, rather than the trappings of fame.
Blunt elaborated: “He’s the worst celebrity in the world. He’s the best actor in the world and the worst celebrity in the world.”
When the interviewer pressed the actress on what made Murphy the ‘best actor in the world,’ she quickly affirmed her belief and called him her ‘favorite actor to work with.’
The Mary Poppins Returns star described how Murphy brings a unique energy to every scene: “He’s unparalleled in what he can do and how he pulls you in. The whole room crackles with a certain life force when you work with him.”
Despite being lauded as one of the most talented actors of his generation, Murphy remains grounded and humble, which makes Blunt’s ‘worst celebrity’ label all the more endearing.
