Eminem has one song he dislikes so strongly, he now refuses to play it whenever he performs live.

The Detroit-born rap icon, whose birth name is Marshall Mathers, stands as one of the most commercially successful hip-hop artists in history. He is widely celebrated for massive chart-toppers like Without Me, Love The Way You Lie, and Rap God.

At 53 years old, the Lose Yourself artist has achieved global sales exceeding 220 million albums, accumulating more than 50 platinum album certifications throughout his career.

Yet, buried within his massive discography lies a single track that he deeply regrets creating, and his reasons for hating it are deeply personal.

A complicated family dynamic in the spotlight

The volatile dynamic between Eminem and his mother has served as a central, recurring narrative in his music for decades.

During the early stages of his career, he frequently targeted her with viciously critical lyrics. Now that he has matured, it is understandable why he chooses to permanently retire one specific record from his live shows.

Still, his mother remained the target of various other insults scattered across his older music.

The rapper eventually extended a formal apology to his mother for his past lyrical attacks through his poignant track, Headlights.

His musical apology begins: “My mum probably got it the worst. The brunt of it, but as stubborn as we are, did I take it too far?

“But regardless, I don’t hate you ‘cause ma. You’re still beautiful to me, ‘cause you’re my mum.”

The emotional track continues: “But I’m sorry mama […] at the time I was angry.

“Rightfully maybe so, never meant that far to take it though, ‘cause.

“Now I know it’s not your fault and I’m not making jokes. That song I no longer play at shows and I cringe every time it’s on the radio.”

Looking back at a painful childhood

Throughout Headlights, Eminem reflects on a series of painful memories from his upbringing, including being forced out of his home on Christmas Eve, endless domestic arguments, and the placement of his brother, Nathan, into the foster care system.

Even though the two remained distant, his lyrics opened the door for healing as he expressed his sorrow over their fractured, ‘dysfunctional’ bond.

Eminem adds: “But ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan yo. All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both.

“Foster care, that cross you bare, few may be as heavy as yours. But I love you Debbie Mathers, oh what a tangled web we have.”

Concluding his public apology, Eminem states: “And I’m mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad.”

A Mother’s Day release brings closure

The official music video for Headlights premiered on Mother’s Day, framing the tumultuous history between the rapper and his mother entirely from her point of view.

The video wraps up with an emotional reunion where Eminem embraces her and hands her a letter, which features the written lyrics to Headlights.

According to Rap-Up, the infamous track that Eminem refuses to ever perform live again is his 2002 hit, Cleanin’ Out My Closet.

In that particular song, he brands his mother a ‘selfish b****’ and declares his hope that she will ‘burn in hell.’

The fallout from a toxic history

The 2002 track also contains several verses where Eminem alleges that his mother was heavily abusing prescription medication, while promising that she would be barred from ever seeing his daughter, Hailie Jade.

The real-world fallout from these lyrics was severe. In 1999, Eminem’s mother launched a $10 million defamation lawsuit against her son regarding his music, ultimately walking away with a $25,000 settlement two years later, according to ABC.

It was a messy chapter, to say the least.
