Emma Thompson Was ‘Humiliated’ By Husband’s Affair With Helena Bonham Carter
Emma Thompson says she was left ‘humiliated’ by her husband’s affair with fellow actress Helena Bonham Carter.
For millions of fans, the magic of the Harry Potter film series was all about spells, adventure, and unforgettable characters.
The blockbuster films brought together an extraordinary cast of British acting talent, many of whom became closely associated with the wizarding world for years.
But away from the cameras and carefully crafted fantasy, the personal lives of some of the stars were far more complicated than audiences realized.
Long before they appeared together in the Harry Potter universe, Thompson, Bonham Carter, and actor-director Kenneth Branagh were involved in a real-life relationship triangle that played out behind closed doors.
While the films were captivating audiences around the globe, the emotional fallout from the affair left Thompson grappling with heartbreak – a painful chapter she has since spoken about openly, describing the experience as deeply humiliating.
The Harry Potter stars linked by a love triangle
Thompson first appeared in the third Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban film, where she played the eccentric Professor Trelawney – the Hogwarts teacher responsible for guiding students through the mysterious subject of Divination.
She later reprised the role in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Meanwhile, Bonham Carter portrayed the villainous Bellatrix Lestrange – one of Lord Voldemort’s most loyal and dangerous followers.

She made her debut in Order of the Phoenix and went on to appear in every subsequent Harry Potter film through to Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Despite both starring in the franchise, their characters never actually cross paths on screen.
Yet off-screen, the two actresses once found themselves linked through a complicated love triangle involving another well-known Harry Potter star.
Thompson married actor Branagh in 1989, but their marriage ended in 1995 after he had an affair with Bonham Carter.
The pair reportedly began their relationship in 1994 while playing onscreen love interests in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Bonham Carter and Branagh then embarked on a five-year relationship following his divorce from Thompson.
In a twist many fans may not realize, all three stars would later go on to appear in the Harry Potter films — with Branagh playing the famously vain professor Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Emma Thompson reflects on the affair
Thompson has since opened up about the painful chapter of her past in an interview with The New Yorker.
The actress now credits her husband of more than three decades, Greg Wise, with helping her rebuild her life after the breakdown of her first marriage, saying he helped ‘pick up the pieces’ and put her back together.
Reflecting on their relationship, she added: “I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married. As my mother says, ‘the first twenty years are the hardest’.”
Thompson first met Wise on the set of Sense and Sensibility in 1995 – the same film that earned her an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. At the time, her split from Branagh had not yet been made public.

Looking back, she admitted she had been ‘utterly blind’ to Branagh’s relationship with Bonham Carter, revealing the discovery left her feeling deeply hurt and ‘unlovable.’
The actress said: “I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set.
“What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”
Thompson explained that she felt ‘half alive’ at the time, saying any sense of being ‘loveable or worthy’ had been destroyed.
Two years before the affair, Bonham Carter had worked with Thompson on the 1992 film Howards End, which earned Thompson an Oscar for Best Actress.
Despite the painful history, Thompson has since said she has ‘forgiven’ Bonham Carter, even channeling her feelings of betrayal into her role as a wronged wife in Love Actually.

Reflecting on the past, she said her split from Branagh is now simply ‘blood under the bridge.’
“You can’t hold on to anything like that. It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.”
While the affair once left her devastated, Thompson has since moved forward with grace and perspective. Years later, the painful chapter has become just that – a chapter – with the actress choosing forgiveness and focusing on the happiness she eventually found.
And for many Harry Potter fans, the revelation remains a surprising reminder that behind the magic of the beloved films were very real stories unfolding away from the screen.
